Abstract

A processing line includes a conveyor for conveying product from upstream processing equipment to downstream processing equipment. Data structures stored in a memory of a controller comprise a backlog set point for a product type to be processed. A product sensor for the conveyor is enabled to generate signals representative of a number of the products moving on the conveyor from the upstream processing equipment for delivery to the downstream processing equipment. A conveyor speed sensor for the conveyor is enabled to generate signals representative of a speed of the conveyor. A backlog measurement based upon the product sensor signals and the conveyor speed sensor signals is determined. The backlog measurement is compared to the backlog set point to determine a difference in backlog. The controller is enabled to generate signals for controlling the processing line based upon the difference in backlog and additional information related to the product type.

Abstract

A method is provided for removing mandrels from successive rolls of convolutely wound web material. In one aspect, a roll of web convolutely wound around a mandrel (M1, M2) is moved to a position in which the mandrel is aligned with a clasp (60) with the clasp spaced apart from the mandrel. The clasp (60) is then moved along a path toward the roll. Movement of the clasp toward the roll is stopped only when the clasp is in a position to engage the mandrel. The mandrel is engaged with the clasp. The clasp and the mandrel are moved away from the roll to withdraw the mandrel from the roll. The mandrel is released from the clasp when the mandrel is removed from the roll. The mandrel is removed from the path of the clasp. The steps are repeated for a subsequent roll.

Abstract

Rolls of an embosser laminator unit may be calibrated with an iterative process of moving axial ends of the roll a set incremental distance until contact between the rolls is made and then making a correction to the distance based upon the end of the roll making contact. The rolls may be move an initial position where the faces of the rolls are devoid of contact with each other. One or both of the rolls may be rotated. The distance between the ends of the rolls may be decreased until the faces of the rolls make contact with each other. The distance between the first ends of the rolls may be increased by an incremental amount, and a determination of contact between the faces of the rolls may be made by alternate movement of the rolls by the incremental amount and position prior to contact.

Abstract

A converting line (10) has a unwind machine with a load station assembly (22) and a pivot arm/vertical movement assembly (30). The load station assembly (22) rotatably supports a roll as the web is unwound during a first portion of an unwind cycle. The pivot arm/ vertical movement assembly (30) rotatably supports the roll during movement between lowered and raised positions during a second portion of the unwind cycle. A lower brake assembly (70) controls rotation of the roll in the load station assembly (22), and an upper brake assembly (90) controls rotation of the roll with the roll in the pivot arm/vertical movement assembly (30). With the roll rotatably supported in the load station assembly (22), the converting line control generates signals for the lower brake assembly to control an unwind rotation rate of the roll. With the roll rotatably supported by the pivot arm/vertical movement assembly (30), the control generates signals for the upper brake assembly to control the unwind rotation rate.

Abstract

A method for unwinding includes loading a first reel of web material into a first unwind position where the web is unwound. A splicing unit is then moved in the machine direction toward the first unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into a second unwind position where the web from the second reel is unwound once loaded. Then, the web from the first reel is spliced to the second reel, and the web of the first reel is thereafter cut. The process continues in the opposite direction after removing the first reel from the first unwind position. The web of the second reel is unwound in the second position, the splicing unit is moved toward the second unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into the first unwind position.

Abstract

An accumulator has a control system for controlling motion of a plurality of buckets on a continuous loop and logs traversing on a log transfer device. The log transfer device delivers a log from an entrance of the log transfer device to a bucket infeed on the accumulator. The bucket infeed receives a log from the log transfer device and allows a bucket to receive the log from the log transfer device. A time for the log to move from the entrance of the log transfer device to the bucket infeed is determined. Based on the time for the log to move from the entrance of the log transfer device to the bucket infeed, the control system controls the accumulator drive to move the continuous loop such that a bucket in the plurality of buckets is positioned at the bucket infeed with sufficient time to allow the bucket to receive the log from the log transfer device.

Abstract

An overwrap feed station wraps a product with an overwrap material by drawing the overwrap material around the product to form a tube around the product as the product moves through the feed station. The feed station is configurable in one of first and second configurations based upon a desired location of a longitudinal seal to be formed on the tube around the product. A first former is configured to guide the overwrap material through the entrance of the feed station so that longitudinal edges of the overwrap material overlap on a first side of the tube during wrapping of the product. Abstract

A system has first and second winding drums and a core feeder for inserting a core into a winding nest for forming a convoluted roll. The leading edge of the web is engaged with a threading belt and directed around the first winding drum and through the winding nest to a position where the leading edge is beyond where the core feeder inserts the core into the winding nest thus providing an excess portion of the web between the leading edge and the core feeder core insertion position. A thread-up core is inserted into the winding nest and rotated with the winding drums so that the excess portion moves around the thread-up core. The leading edge is separated from the threading belt, the excess portion of the web is wound around the thread-up core, and the web from the supply is wound around the thread-up core.

Abstract

A device and a method is disclosed to maintain plate and anilox mandrel position stability in print decks of a flexographic printing press. In one aspect, the mandrel bearings associated with at least one of the plate roll and the anilox roll are preloaded for the purpose of eliminating backlash and increasing the positional stiffness of the bearings, and thus the mandrel. In another aspect, the roll drive motor control system is enabled to provide a torque additive command the torque profile to maintain rotational consistency and otherwise overcome torque transients experienced by the motor during print bounce. Accordingly, the problem commonly referred to as print bounce and or print banding is alleviated.
