Abstract
Chromonic azo dyes are particular types of chromonic molecules that are alignable homeotropically (aggregated molecules stacked perpendicularly to the surface) on different types of substrates, often without the need of any special surface treatment. This feature enables the optimization of a detection device with increased sensitivity based of the alignment distortion created by a biological immune complex.

Abstract
A novel detection system and method is presented, where a two-bead receptor method is used for capturing pathogens, with one type of bead being magnetic and having a size of 3 microns or smaller, and the other type being polymeric and having a size of 3 microns or larger. The first type is used to concentrate a pathogen; the latter is used to create a detectable signal. Fast sensitive detection is achieved by collecting the optical signal created by the distortion of a homeotropically aligned chromonic azo dye in the presence of captured pathogens.

Abstract
A method of aligning liquid crystals in a cell includes the steps of optimizing the concentration of the liquid crystal in a carrier medium, transforming the liquid crystal into its isotropic phase; heating the cell to a temperature which is slightly lower than the temperature of the liquid crystal, filling the cell with the liquid crystal, rapidly cooling the filled cell to transform the liquid crystal into the nematic phase and rewarming the cell to a temperature approximately at the phase line separating the nematic phase from the mixed nematic nematic-isotropic phase. An improved alignment surface for forming the cell comprises an uncoated, rubbed surface to drive uniform alignment of the liquid crystals.
IPC Classes ?
- G02F 1/1337 - Surface-induced orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, e.g. by alignment layers
- G02F 1/1341 - Filling or closing of cells
