Abstract

The present invention provides a method of calculating the load capacity of a wellhead system. The method comprises determining a first contact stress at a first interface between an annular component and a collar and equating a radial deflection of an inner surface of the annular component with a radial deflection of an outer surface of the collar. The method uses a first contact stress and the axial movement of the annular component to determine a contact stress at a gripping interface between a gripping surface and an inner tubular member. The method also equates a radial deflection of the outer surface of the inner tubular member with (i) a radial deflection of the gripping surface plus (ii) a depth of penetration of a ridge of the outer surface of the inner tubular member into the gripping surface (iii) a radial dimension of an initial gap between the outer surface of the inner tubular member and the inner surface of the outer tubular member.

Abstract

A crown plug for a tree of an oil/gas well/wellhead has a securement arrangement for securing the crown plug within the tree. The main body of the crown plug comprises a solid body creating the barrier within the production bore. The solid body creates a robust, strong and reliable barrier. The crown plug is retained within the outer member through inward distortion which secures the crown plug. The securement arrangement arises from an inward radial force that distorts the outer member inwardly to grip a component located within the outer member. The outer member elastically deforms and the outer member returns to a released position once the clamping force is released. Two concentric oppositely arranged tapered surfaces move axially to create the inwardly directed force. The clamping force and the solid body together provide an improved crown plug which is easy and reliable to operate.

Abstract

A pressure energised seal for a wellhead, in particular, provides a seal of an annulus between an inner wellhead casing member and an outer wellhead casing member. The wellhead incorporates a clamping arrangement whereby the outer member is arranged to be deflected radially inwardly in order to grip and secure the inner member within the bore of the outer member. Also, a seal for use in such a clamping arrangement. In particular, the seal includes a sealing lip which locates within a groove provided in the outer clamping surface of the inner member. A seal is activated and created as the outer member is clamped inwardly since this causes the outer member to compress the inner member and to reduce the diameter of the inner member. Also, a well and a method of sealing an annulus in a well.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a crown plug (10) for a tree of/associated with an oil/gas well/wellhead and a securement arrangement (50) for securing the crown plug (10) within the tree. The main body (12) of the crown plug (10) comprises a solid body to create the barrier within the production bore. The solid body thereby creates a robust, strong and reliable barrier. The crown plug (10) is retained within the outer member (30) through the distortion of the outer member (30) inwardly which thereby grips and clamps the crown plug (10) within the bore. The securement arrangement comprises a clamping arrangement (50) by which an inward radial force is generated in order to distort (deflect/compress) an outer member (30) inwardly in order to grip a component located within the outer member (30). The outer member (30) is elastically deformed such that the outer member (30) will return to a released position once the clamping force is released/removed. In the preferred embodiment, two concentric oppositely arranged tapered surfaces are arranged to move axially over each other to create the inwardly directed force. The combination of the clamping (squeeze) securing force together with the solid body provides an improved crown plug arrangement which is also easy and reliable to operate.

Abstract

As shown in Figure 1, the present invention provides a pressure energised seal (10) for a wellhead (11) and, in particular, provides a seal (10) of an annulus between an inner wellhead casing member (14) and an outer wellhead casing member (16). The wellhead (11) incorporates a clamping arrangement (22) whereby the outer member (6) is arranged to be deflected radially inwardly in order to grip and secure the inner member (14) within the bore of the outer member (16). The present invention provides an improved seal for use in such a clamping arrangement (22). In particular, the seal (10) includes a sealing lip (12) which locates within a groove provided in the outer clamping surface (15) of the inner member (14). A seal is activated and created as the outer member (16) is clamped inwardly since this causes the outer member (16) to compress the inner member (14) and to reduce the diameter of the inner member (14). This squeezing of the inner member (14) causes the sealing lip (12) to come into contact with the outer member (16) and to be pressed against the outer member (16). This thereby automatically creates a seal as the inner member (14) is clamped by the outer member (16). The normal inherent sealing strength is increased due to the sealing lip (12) being urged to flare (20) outwardly as a result of the pressure within the annulus to be sealed.

Abstract

A wellhead securement arrangement releasably clamps casing strings such that they cannot move in an upwards or downwards longitudinal direction. Prior to being clamped, the securement arrangement secures the casing strings in a first position whereby cement returns are able to flow around the hangers towards the surface. Once cemented, the casing strings are released and moved upwardly, where the securement arrangement clamps the hangers into position, thus creating an axial load on the casing strings while also preventing movement in the upward and downward longitudinal directions.

Abstract

A mudline connector including a compression adaptor which can be elastically deformed onto an internal tubular member. The compression adaptor deflects inwardly to grip upper and lower sealing mandrels, providing axial and bending load support and creating a seal to isolate bore pressure from an outer annulus. The clamping arrangement provides a sealed connection between two well casing sections extending in opposite axial directions. The well casings are gripped and held in an end to end configuration by a radial load applied internally by a compression ring. The connector is activated by introducing pressure to activate pistons which in turn provide an axial thrust to stroke the internally tapered compression ring along the externally tapered compression collar, effectively creating an interference fit therebetween. This deflects the inner surface of the compression collar inwardly, deflecting the compression adaptor inwardly to grip the outer surfaces of the upper and lower sealing mandrels.

Abstract

The present invention provides a wellhead securement arrangement including a first inner casing string 32 which is held in axial loading and a second inner casing string 56 which is also held in axial loading. Both of the first and second inner casing strings 32, 56 are releasably clamped such that the casing strings 32, 56 cannot move in an upwards or a downwards longitudinal direction. Prior to being clamped in such a position, the wellhead securement arrangement provides first retaining means to retain the first and second casing strings in cementing position whereby "cement returns" are able to flow around the respective hangers 36, 58 and upward through a casing towards the surface. Once cemented, the upper hangers 36, 58 of the respective inner casing strings 32, 56 are moved upwardly where the hanger 36, 58 is then clamped in position to maintain the respective inner casing string 32, 56 under an axial load whilst being prevented from moving either upwardly or downwardly.

Abstract

The present invention provides a mudline connector (10) including a compression adaptor (40) which can be elastically deformed onto an internal tubular member. In the preferred embodiment the compression adaptor (40) deflects inwardly to grip an upper and a lower sealing mandrel (50, 56) in order to provide axial and bending load support and create a seal in order to isolate bore (160) pressure from an outer annulus (170) and vice-versa. The clamping arrangement (10) thereby provides a sealed connection between two well casing sections which extend in opposite axial directions. The well casings are gripped and held in an end to end configuration. The connector (10) does this by means of a radial load applied internally by a compression ring (60).The connector (10) is activated by introducing pressure into a piston port activation thus stroking an activation piston(s) (80) which in turn provides an axial thrust to stroke the internally tapered compression ring (60) along the externally tapered compression collar (70) effectively creating an interference fit therebetween. This deflects the inner surface of the compression collar (70) inwardly which thereby deflects the compression adaptor (40) inwardly in order to grip the outer surfaces of the upper and lower sealing mandrels (50, 56).

Abstract

A clamp for clamping two concentric tubes, typically two concentric tubes in
an oil or
gas well. The clamp has two axially movable tapered components which can be
pulled over one
another in an axial direction to provide a contraction of internal diameter
which grips the smaller
diameter tube. In one embodiment, a spacer is fitted to allow the tapered
components to be held
apart until the tubes have been correctly positioned. The spacer is then
removed, and the tapered
components are drawn together to effect the clamping. A hydraulic ram can be
provided to
separate the tapered components should readjustment be required. In another
embodiment, the
larger diameter tube is made with a relatively thin wall, so that it can be
distorted inwards to grip
the smaller tube.

Abstract

This invention relates to a method of determining a grip coefficient in a wellhead system. The method comprises: forming a test block having opposite side surfaces including a ridged profile, the test block being made from the same material as at least an outer surface of an inner tubular member of a wellhead system; gripping the test block between two gripping plates so as to form an interface between each of the side surfaces and a test face of a respective one of the gripping plates, the test face being made from the same material as at least an inner surface of an outer tubular member of a wellhead system; applying a gradually increasing load to the test block in a direction parallel to a plane of the interface; continuously monitoring relative movement between the test block and the gripping plate at the interfaces; determining the applied load at which slip between the test block and the gripping plates occurs; and determining the grip coefficient by calculating the ratio of the applied load to the gripping force at the time slip occurs.

Abstract

-24- P6656.PC/NAJ 01 September 2014 ABSTRACT Running Tool The present invention provides a running tool 10 for a casing hanger 12 in which the casing hanger 12 is arranged to be clamped withina well bore. In the clamped position, the suspension weight of the casing hanger 12 (and suspended) casing string is supported by the wellhead and the running tool 10 is then releasable from the casing hanger 12.The release of the running tool 10 from the casing hanger 12 is performed by applying an axial pressure down the running tool 10 which then enables the securement means 30 of the running tool 10 to be moved into an unsecured position. In the secured position, the casing hanger 12 is suspendable from the running tool 10 and the running tool 10 supports the suspension weight of the casing hanger 12 (and the casing string located there below). The running tool 10 comprises activation means 40 in order to enable the securement means 30 to move from the secured position to the unsecured position. The running tool 10 includes release prevention means 50 in order to prevent the movement of the securement means 30 from the secured position to the unsecured position whilst the suspension weight of the casing hanger 12 is suspended from the running tool 10.
