Abstract

Abstract
There are provided recycled polystyrene polymers having a melt flow index of less than about 25 g/10 min. There are provided processes for recycling polystyrene waste. The processes can comprise dissolving said polystyrene waste in p-cymene under conditions to obtain a polystyrene/p-cymene mixture, adding the polystyrene/p-cymene mixture to a hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent under conditions to obtain precipitated polystyrene and washing the precipitated polystyrene with additional portions of hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent under conditions to obtain twice-washed polystyrene. The twice-washed polystyrene can optionally be dried and formed into polystyrene pellets. There is also provided recycled polystyrene obtained from such processes for recycling polystyrene waste.

Abstract

The method comprises combining the styrenic polymer waste with a solvent to obtain a soluble portion and an insoluble portion, separating the soluble and insoluble portion, and either the flame retardant is substantially in the soluble portion and the styrenic polymer is substantially in the insoluble portion or vice versa.

Abstract
There are provided processes for recycling waste such as polystyrene thermoplastic polymer waste and/or polystyrene thermoplastic copolymer waste as well as recycled polystyrene thermoplastic polymer and/or recycled thermoplastic copolymer that may, for example, be obtained from such processes. The recycled polystyrene and/or recycled polystyrene copolymer obtained therefrom has a transmittance ranging from 80 to 99%; the transmittance being measured in a UV-VIS spectrum at 600 nm at 20° C. on solution comprising the recycled polystyrene and/or recycled polystyrene copolymer diluted in cymene, and wherein the reference solution for 100% of transmittance in a UV-VIS spectrum at 600 nm at 20° C. is a solution of virgin polystyrene homopolymer diluted in cymene, wherein the content of virgin polystyrene is 20 wt. % of the total weight of the reference solution, wherein the content of recycled polystyrene and/or recycled polystyrene copolymer is 20 wt. % of the total weight of the solution.

Abstract
There are provided processes for recycling waste such as polystyrene thermoplastic polymer waste and/or polystyrene thermoplastic copolymer waste as well as recycled polystyrene thermoplastic polymer and/or recycled thermoplastic copolymer that may, for example, be obtained from such processes. The processes can comprise dissolving the waste in cymene, xylene or ethylbenzene or a suitable solvent, to obtain a mixture followed by heating the mixture under acidic conditions and then optionally neutral conditions in the presence of a reducing agent then cooling to obtain a supernatant comprising polystyrene thermoplastic polymer and/or polystyrene thermoplastic copolymer and a solid waste residue. The supernatant can optionally be treated with a filtration aid, then the supernatant can be contacted with a hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent under conditions to obtain precipitated polystyrene thermoplastic polymer and/or precipitated polystyrene thermoplastic copolymer which can be washed with additional hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent, and optionally dried and formed into polystyrene thermoplastic polymer pellets and/or polystyrene thermoplastic copolymer pellets.

Abstract

Abstract
A recycled polystyrene having a melt flow index of less than 25 g/10min and a content of additive(s) of less than 1 wt%. The additives are chosen from coloring agents, fillers, flame retardants, lubricants, and plasticizers. The recycled polystyrene comprises about 0.05 wt% to about 0.3 wt% ethylbenzene and comprises heptane. Moreover, the recycled polystyrene comprises about 0.1 wt% to about 2 wt% of octadecyl-3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate. The recycled polystyrene allows for significantly increasing the life cycle of recycled polystyrene.
