Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for taking volumetric measurements from volumetric images obtained by a volumetric image capturing device. The method comprises the steps of: guiding the radiation emitted from an object extended over an optical cavity made up of reflective surfaces; and configuring the optical cavity to generate different optical path lengths to the radiation guided by the optical cavity, depending on the starting position of the radiation from the object and on the direction of propagation of the radiation from the object. The described method enhances the resolution and simplifies the complexity of the components compared to other methods for capturing volumetric images. It is used to quickly capture volumetric images to make neurophysiological recordings, release neurotransmitters in the brain and be implemented in other technical fields that require high-speed volumetric measurements, such as illumination with specific volumetric patterns, characterisation of the volumetric light field and time-controlled interferometric measurements.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for the synthesis of a branched copolymer of hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and the branched copolymer thus obtained (HA-g-PLGA). Said method comprises activating the PLGA with coupling reagents in a water miscible solvent; solubilizing the HA in a phosphate buffered saline solution; and adding the activated PLGA solution dropwise to the solution with HA to obtain the branched copolymer. The advantages of the present method are that it uses environmentally friendly conditions and allows the copolymer to be synthesized and purified in less than a week under laboratory conditions. In addition, the branched copolymer obtained does not present traces of any of the reagents used for its synthesis, so it can be used directly in the development of applications for human use.

Abstract

The invention aims at a non-invasive method of early diagnosis of gastric cancer, using as a biomarker the levels of methylation of the DNA sequence of the promoter of the Reprimo-like gene in plasma. The inventors have established the utility of Reprimo-like as a biomarker, and especially as a biomarker for the early detection of gastric cancer, since they have determined that Reprimo-like is consistently silenced in gastric cancer, both in incipient and advanced stages. This silencing is given by methylation of its promoter region, which is detectable in plasma samples, allowing us to measure it as a liquid biopsy in a non-invasive, fast and inexpensive way.

Abstract

Techniques for quantifying respiration using a wearable device are described. According to some aspects, a wearable device includes multiple thermal sensors thermally coupled to one or more heat spreaders. The wearable device may in some cases be small enough to be wearable between the mouth and nose of the patient, such as via an adhesive attachment to the upper lip. When the patient exhales, air is produced through the mouth and/or through the nose. Each heat spreader may absorb heat of exhaled air which may thermally propagate to a thermal sensor coupled to the heat spreader. By measuring the change in temperature over time measured by the thermal sensors, measures of respiration such as respiratory rate, minute volume and/or tidal volume of the patient may be determined. Such measures may be determined by the wearable device or by an external device to which data is transmitted.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for preparing a stratified-concrete panel with at least one layer of structural concrete and at least one layer of thermally and acoustically insulating concrete, using only a process of concreting and placement. This allows the elimination of the extra tasks of adding insulating material to the concrete structures, thereby increasing the productivity of the construction processes. The invention also relates to a stratified-concrete panel and to the use thereof as a construction structure, such as walls and slabs of the envelopes of dwellings, residential or industrial buildings, and acoustic insulation road barriers, the panel having good thermal behaviour and acoustic insulation behaviour.

Abstract

The invention consists of a device to evaluate hemodynamic response generated by the spinal cord in response to a suprasensorial stimulus applied to a peripheral nerve (medium or posterior tibial) by the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The device consists of 3 main components, an electrical stimulator, an optical recording unit and a signal processing and control module. The device allows non-invasive, comfortable, harmless, portable, home-based, and low-cost evaluation of changes in local hemodynamic parameters in response to neuronal activation of the spinal cord by electrical stimulation of a peripheral nerve. The invention also includes a corresponding method of using the device and monitoring the spinal function.

Abstract

The present invention consists of functionalised NDs (fNDs) -housing stable fluorescent colour centres- with a bifunctional peptide capable of recognising extracellular amyloid-beta aggregates (Aß) and the accumulation thereof, which is considered the true cause of neuronal damage and cognitive decline in AD. fNDs are not cytotoxic and enable ultrasensitive detection (using picomolar Nd concentrations) of amyloid fibrils and amyloid aggregates. Moreover, the fluorescence of fNDs is more stable than the common colour markers used to dye Aß, such as Thioflavin T.
