Abstract

Fiber-optic equipment is often deployed in various locations, and performance of fiber-optic transmissions may be monitored as a gauge of equipment status to prevent costly and inconvenient communication outages. Events that damage equipment that eventually result in outage and may be desirable to address proactively, but the occurrence of such events may be difficult to detect only through equipment performance. Presented herein are techniques for monitoring and maintaining fiber-optic equipment performance via enclosure sensors that measure physical properties within a fiber-optic equipment enclosure, such as temperature, pressure, light, motion, vibration, and moisture, which are often diagnostic and predictive of causes of eventual communication outages, such as temperature-induced cable loss (TICL), incomplete flash-testing during installation, exposure to hazardous environmental conditions, and tampering. An enclosure sensor package transmits the physical measurements to a monitoring station, and automatic determination of enclosure- related events may enable triaging and transmission of repair alerts to maintenance personnel.

Abstract

A cable wedge assembly that can streamline installation of cabling assemblies upon trees and other structures is provided. For example, the cable wedge assembly need not require specialized tools for installation. Rather, the unique features and functions of the assembly attach to a cable merely by inserting a cable through the assembly, tightening a portion of the connector upon another and establishing tension in the cable. Once cable tension is established, the integral wedges seat causing attachment to and retention of the cable. This attachment and retention is effected by way of split conical inserts disposed within the housing of the assembly.

More particularly, the CLAS improves time and efficiency of installation upon a cable under tension by employing a hinged center-lock mechanism. During installation the hinged center-lock mechanism enables the unit to be hinged-open, placed upon a cable under tension and hinged-closed. Once hinged-closed over the cable under tension, standard ‘off-the-shelf’ straps or tie-strips can be used to secure the unit into place, without a need for any specialized tools, hardware kits or brackets.

Abstract

A spacer and/or spacer damper that provides for uniform spacing of horizontally bundled sub-conductors as well as enhanced heat dissipation is disclosed. More particularly, when applied to electrical transmission lines, the configuration of the spacer and/or spacer damper can include formed-wire outer rods which increase the conductor surface area thereby enhance heat dissipation. In other words, the outer rod assembly disclosed herein can provide for minimizing damaging effects of motion while enhancing heat dissipation of the underlying conductor and connector arm. Still further, the subject spacer or spacer damper can alleviate entangling of the sub-conductors most often caused by galloping, ice unloading, and fault currents.

Abstract

An aerial cable spacer is provided with a cable retainer and vertically disposed strengthening tabs or ribs. The cable retainer includes a cable retaining arm. A mid portion of the cable retaining arm has a non-rectangular plus “+” shaped cross section. The plus “+” shaped cross section engages and exerts a force on the cable as the cable retaining arm bends to a closed position. The arm is flexible so as to create a resilient force in conjunction with the plus “+” shaped cross section to securely hold the cable on a cable seat of a main body portion of the aerial cable spacer. A pawl is carried on the arm at a predetermined orientation to engage a corresponding set of teeth on the spacer body for enhanced cable clamping force.
