Abstract
A steam direct injection injector and direct injection heater assembly. The injector defines an enclosure having an upstream end that is constructed to receive a steam fluid flow and a plurality of radially oriented orifices that are configured to distribute and inject the steam into a surrounding fluid. A seat is disposed proximate a downstream end of the injector and a movable plug or modulating component is disposed within the enclosure proximate the seat. A biasing element is disposed between the seat and the modulating component and configured to interact with the seat and the modulating component to allow selective exposure of a second heating section without obstructing a first heating section that are defined by the radially oriented orifices of the injector.

Abstract
The claimed invention teaches direct contact steam injection heater capable of handling steam pressure in excess of 300 psi. Specifically, the invention provides: a fixed upper seal assembly situated between the diffuser base and the diffuser which is designed to prevent the flow of steam around the regulating member into the diffuser.

Abstract
An improved configuration for an in-line direct contact diffuser-type steam injection heater provides for a diffuser whereby steam flow is controlled using an angled sonic diffuser and plug arrangement. The steam flow is controlled by means of a steam plug which selectively exposes holes through which the steam passes. In the preferred embodiment, the configuration provides for a diffuser that had been angled approximately 30° from vertical to facilitate better mixing of the steam with the fluid. The precise angle may be altered depending on the fluid characteristics. A more durable end seal is also used. The end seal is a piston ring which prevents problems associated with the use of elastomeric rings of existing art. A more uniform diameter plug with linear travel is also an improvement over the prior art.
