Abstract

In typical practice today, clinicians in the fields of interventional radiology, radiation therapy, neurology, cardiology, and other spaces often utilize multiple techniques to prepare, image, and treat patients for complex, image-guided procedures. Such procedures may utilize one of x-ray imaging, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, angiography, among others, or combinations thereof to combine the strengths of each modality while minimizing undesirable tradeoffs. An objective problem exists of how to track the position and/or orientation of a patient transfer apparatus or support while it is in use on diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, independent of the inbuilt or external tracking measures of the modality, which is especially needed in light of today's modern multimodal diagnostic and treatment procedures. The present invention is directed to system and methods for tracking the coordinates of a patient transfer apparatus with selected sensors, transmitters, processors, and reference surfaces having tracking features capable of being detected by the sensors.

Abstract

A low temperature thermoplastic material for use in medical procedures including radiotherapy patient immobilization, orthopedic splinting or casting, plastic and reconstructive surgery splinting, and orthotic or prosthetic socket cone production or reproduction. The material is made from a thermoplastic that softens when heated to approximately 140°F, after which it can then be formed directly on the patient. The material will then retain this new shape as it cools. The material is composed of Polycaprolactone reinforced with a discontinuous short length fiber and/or fines. The device can also be cross-linked to improve its handling properties.

Abstract

A radiation therapy patient couch top which provides optimal fields of treatment in a high-energy radiation therapy environment and superior imaging qualities when used in a diagnostic imaging x-ray environment. All metal is eliminated from the treatment imaging area, thus no metal will be in the way of the radiation treatment beam and no artifacting will occur when used with diagnostic imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography. By employing moveable fiber reinforced support beams, the main patient support structure can be positioned so that a minimum of electron generation will occur through Compton scattering. By allowing for a removable insert, the top patient surface can be optimized for treatment, diagnostic imaging, etc. The insert design allows the tip end of the beams to be free from any cross members, and a CT simulator insert provides the same dosimetric properties for the patient couchtop and devices during patient treatment planning.
