Abstract

Haematuria is a considerable burden within primary and secondary care; too many haematuria patients are referred to secondary care for invasive and expensive investigations that could be managed in primary care. The current invention has identified biomarker combinations with utility for the diagnosis of bladder cancer in males. Using gender specific biomarker algorithms in combination with clinical risks that are associated with bladder cancer, would allow clinicians to better manage haematuria patients in primary care setting.

Abstract

Single markers lack both sensitivity and specificity to stratify risk of PCa in patients who present with elevated tPSA and abnormal DRE. The novel combination of serum markers identified in this study could be employed to help triage patients into ‘low’ and ‘high’ risk categories, allowing general practitioners (GPs) to improve management of patients in primary care settings and potentially reducing the number of referrals for unnecessary, invasive, and costly treatments.

Abstract

The current invention provides methods which can be implemented alongside clinical variables as risk prediction tools for improved prediction of CKD progression and mortality. Surprisingly it was found that decreased C3a-desArg was associated with adverse outcome in CKD, and when combined with increased STNFR1 and NGAL it gave an excellent predictor of progression to a composite endpoint in CKD patients.

Abstract

A method of monitoring and controlling the processing of biological samples, the method comprising the steps of: receiving (101) a plurality of sample containers, each containing biological material; assigning (102) a priority to each of the sample containers; queueing (103) the sample containers for analysis based on the assigned priorities; extracting (104) a biological sample from each of the plurality of sample containers based on said sample container's position in the queue; analysing (105) each biological sample; providing (106) either a valid result or an inconclusive result for each of the biological samples based on said analysing; for each biological sample for which an inconclusive result has been provided, assigning (109) a new priority to the respective sample container and repeating the queueing, extracting, analysing, and providing steps.

Abstract

Haematuria is a considerable burden within primary and secondary care; too many haematuria patients are referred to secondary care for invasive and expensive investigations that could be managed in primary care. The current invention has identified biomarker combinations with prolactin and/or LASP-1 with utility for the diagnosis of bladder cancer in males.

The novel combination of serum markers identified in this study could be employed to help triage patients into 'low' and 'high' risk categories, allowing general practitioners (GPs) to improve management of patients in primary care settings and potentially reducing the number of referrals for unnecessary, invasive, and costly treatments.

Abstract

There is provided a bracket for a biological sample analyser. The bracket comprises a base and an arm extending from the base, the base being engageable with a platform of a biological sample analyser, wherein, when the base is engaged with the platform, the arm extends into a sample plate bay of the biological sample analyser prohibiting access to a portion of the bay. The arm thereby limits misalignment of a sample plate in the bay by blocking access to a portion of the bay only required when the sample plate is loaded into the bay in an incorrect orientation. A biological sample analyser comprising a bay in which a sample plate is loadable in use and the bracket is also provided.

Abstract

Herein we have identified a protein signature that is easily measured in blood and urine and highly predictive of bladder cancer (BC) risk in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients. This biomarker model could be applied to screen T2DM patients presenting with haematuria for BC in diabetes clinics. Earlier urology referral of T2DM patients will improve outcomes for these patients.

Abstract

To diagnose a mental disorder, clinicians normally perform a physical examination, a psychological evaluation and use the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or equivalent classification system. Many critics of the DSM see it as an oversimplification of the vast continuum of human behaviour. The current invention provides biomarker combinations which could be used in conjunction with the DSM or equivalent classification system to support clinical decisions and reduce the potential risk of misdiagnosis or even over-diagnosis of patients.

Abstract

There is provided a method of classifying a biological status of an individual. The method comprising: obtaining a biological sample from a patient; obtaining health-related information from the patient, said information including patient gender; analysing the sample to identify a quantity of each of 2 or more endogenous analytes in the sample; comparing the analyte quantities to reference data from healthy individuals to classify the patient as healthy, pre-diseased, at risk of disease or diseased for at least one health-related condition. The reference data includes data derived from a group of biological samples of individuals having the same gender as the patient and not having a need for medical treatment for a disease or illness, each biological sample of the group of biological samples having been analysed by the same process as used to analyse the patient sample, the process being monitored to maintain a predetermined level of consistency.
