A pressure sensor for a toothbrush. The pressure sensor includes a substrate, a contact arm in the substrate, a power source, a signal element, and a sensor contact. The sensor contact may be mounted to the substrate such that the contact arm is not in contact with the sensor contact when the substrate is not flexed. As a user applies pressure to a toothbrush head, the substrate can flex and move the contact arm toward the sensor contact. When a threshold force is applied to the toothbrush head, the contact arm can contact the sensor contact, completing a circuit between the power source, the sensor contact, and the signal element that activates the signal element. A second sensor contact can be mounted to the substrate opposite the first sensor contact. The second sensor contact can allow the signal element to indicate three different states to a user.
A lighted toothbrush includes a handle housing with toothbrush components mounted within the internal cavity, including a power source, a printed circuit board, and a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs are mounted to the printed circuit board at generally the same position along the longitudinal length of the circuit board, with a first one of the LEDs mounted to the first surface of the printed circuit board, and a second one of the LEDs mounted to the second surface of the printed circuit board. A light ring formed of a light transmissive material is positioned on the handle housing adjacent the first and second ones of the plurality of LEDs, wherein light from the first LED is visible through the light ring at a first circumferential position on the handle housing and light from the second LED is visible through the light ring at a second circumferential position on the handle housing.

A replaceable brush head includes an upper surface, an outer perimeter edge, and a plurality of tufts. The upper surface includes a plurality of bristle tufts. The lower surface includes an outwardly extending knock-out button. The outer perimeter edge includes at least one protrusion. The replaceable brush head may be installed in a toothbrush body that includes a head portion having a recess sized to fit the replaceable brush head with a knock-out opening for the knock-out button and at least one channel for coupling to the at least one protrusion. The replaceable brush head can be removed from the toothbrush assembly by applying a force to the knock-out button in the direction of the tuft plate.

A drive mechanism for electric toothbrush includes a grip housing and a pivot housing mounted within the grip housing. The pivot housing has a fixed portion, a movable portion with a free end spaced from the fixed portion, and bridge that connects the fixed and movable portions and defines a fulcrum. A motor is mounted within the pivot housing, and an eccentric weight extends from the motor with the motor operable to rotate the eccentric weight. A brush shaft is attached to the pivot housing opposite the free end. A power source is adapted to activate the motor and rotate the eccentric weight, such that the free end of the pivot housing is driven to move by the movement of the eccentric weight, the pivot housing pivots at the fulcrum, and the brush end of the brush shaft oscillates about the fulcrum.
A toothbrush can include a handle and a head. At least one bristle can be attached to the head. The toothbrush can also have an illumination member, an illumination circuit and an activation device. A pliant base on the handle can be used to activate the activation device to initiate the illumination circuit.
An oral care composition is disclosed. The oral care composition includes (A) an adhesive agent comprising an alkylated polyvinylpyrrolidone, (B) a miscibility component comprising an acrylic acid-acrylate copolymer, and (C) a plasticizer comprising a polyalkylene glycol. An oral care device is also disclosed. The oral care device includes an oral care layer comprising the oral care composition and a whitening agent. A method of preparing the oral care device is also disclosed, and includes extruding the oral care composition to give the oral care layer, and preparing a laminate comprising the oral care layer. The method may further include processing the laminate to give the oral care device, which may be prepared as an oral care strip or an oral care tray.

A pressure feedback system continuously monitors the level of pressure or force on a brush head and is programmed to provide a feedback signal to a user based on the amount of pressure. The pressure level is monitored as a function of the change in the speed of the drive shaft. The system includes a housing, a motor, a drive shaft for attachment to a brush head, a feedback device, a sensor capable of detecting a change in the rotational speed of the drive shaft, and a microprocessor. The microprocessor is programmed activate the feedback device as a function of the measured change in rotational speed. The sensor may be a Hall effect sensor, or another sensor that is responsive to a magnetic field. A magnet may be positioned on the drive shaft, or another portion of the system that moves as a function of the drive shaft.
