Abstract
An active protection system and method in a portable cutting tool with movable cutting members includes at least: a cutting member stop; a controller/processor triggering the stop upon the detection of a danger condition; a proximal electrode electrically coupled with a tool handle and a distal electrode electrically coupled with the cutting member, to make up an armature of a capacitor, the processing unit feeding an electric output signal into one of the electrodes and detecting an electric input signal on the other electrode. The electric output signal includes different frequencies. A detection unit detecting a complex impedance of the electric input signal at the different frequencies. The processing unit determines a danger condition and causes triggering of the stop based on a value of the magnitude of the complex impedance electric signal and on a phase difference of the impedance electric signal at the different frequencies.

Abstract

Abstract
A safety kit is disclosed for cutting equipment such as electric or engine-operated chain saws. The kit comprises a least a pair of electrodes connected to an integrated-circuit assessment and driving unit, the unit being configured for acquiring a reference capacity value at least upon switching on said equipment and for issuing a safety signal when the capacity value measured between said two electrodes varies by a preset threshold with respect to said reference capacity value, the safety signal being sent to a de-activation actuator for the switching off of the equipment. The kit comprises a first proximal electrode (10a, 100a) which comprises a capacity sensor and consists of a conductive electrode bar applicable in a removable manner to a handle (1) of said equipment, a second distal electrode (10b, 100b) consisting of a conductive plate which may be fastened to a retaining bolt of a support blade (7, 107) of the cutting chain of the equipment, and the integrated-circuit assessment and driving unit which is arranged between said proximal electrode (10a, 100a) and a case (10, 100), and is provided with conductive connection cables (12, 14) to the electrodes and to said switching-off actuator, and said switching-off actuator is in the shape of a relay suited to close/open an electric supply circuit (3, P) of said equipment.

Abstract
A braking arrangement in a chainsaw or similar portable cutting tool is disclosed, comprising a braking device with a drum(5) and strap (6), acting on a cutting device (3)of said portable cutting tool, kept under load by first elastic means (10) the action of which is opposed by disengageable ratchet- gear means (7, 11, 11b, 11c, 12), said ratchet-gear means being disengageable by contact with a snap ratchet (13) arranged in close proximity thereto and integral in rotation with at least one safety lever (8) mounted pivoted(9) on the body (1) of a portable tool in the proximity of a grip (P) for the operator; said snap ratchet (13) is mounted pivoting(13a) on said safety lever (8) and is pushed towards said ratchet-gear means (11c) by second elastic means(14) in opposition to opposition means (15a) controlled by an electromechanical actuator (15), said electromechanical actuator being driven in the sense of displacing said opposition means (15a) to release the rotation of said ratchet (13), under the thrust of said second elastic means(14), at least upon the detection of a minimum distance between an operator and said cutting device (3) by a safety system apt to detect said minimum distance.
