A system includes an ultracapacitor module comprising at least one ultracapacitor, wherein the ultracapacitor module is electrically coupled to an external system, such that the ultracapacitor module provides power to the external system for selectively powering the external system, a power source electrically coupled to the ultracapacitor module the power source storing an energy supply and providing the energy supply to the ultracapacitor module, and a DC-to-DC converter for transferring the energy supply from the power source and to the ultracapacitor module. The system includes a controller comprising instructions for a method comprising measuring a voltage of the ultracapacitor module, comparing the voltage of the ultracapacitor module to a voltage threshold, and if the voltage of the at least one ultracapacitor is less than the voltage threshold, transferring the energy supply from the power source to the ultracapacitor module.
