A method of and a device for protecting an electric motor (4) in a pod unit (1) for propulsion of marine vessels against shaft bending shocks when the blades (2) of the pod propeller hit ice blocks or other hard objects, said motor (4) having a drive shaft (3), a rotor (41) and a stator (42), said shocks tending to momentarily bend the drive shaft (3) to such an extent that the rotor (41) will come into contact with the stator (42). In accordance with the present invention, the rotor (41) is prevented from coming in detrimental contact with the stator (42) by providing at least two members (61, 62), which together form a radial plain bearing (6) having mating arcuate bearing surfaces (611 and 621, respectively), which during normal operation of the motor (4) are spaced from one another by a gap and come in contact with one another only at extreme loads with short durations. One of the members (61, 62) is an inner member (61) having a circular circumference that constitutes one (611) of the bearing surfaces (611, 621). The arcuate bearing surface (611) of the inner member (61) is coaxial with the rotor (41) and rotary therewith, and at least one of the other members is an outer member (62), which fixed in relation to the stator (42) and has its arcuate bearing surface (621) coaxial therewith.

Abstract

This invention relates to a method and a Propeller Pitch Control Arrangement, comprising a propeller hub (1) having a number of interface fittings (10) for adjustable pitch positioning of a propeller blade, a positioning device (3), within said hub (1), having a number of propeller control interfaces (34) and an actuator arrangement (2, 4, 5) arranged to move and position said positioning device (3) to enable varying pitch for said propeller blades, characterized in - that said actuator arrangement includes a rotatable shaft (2) with threads (20) interacting with mating threads (30) at said positioning device (3), and, - that said rotatable shaft (2) is driven by a motor device (4,5)positioned adjacent said hub (1).

Abstract

To increase propulsion efficiency and on board ship comfort performance, wherein the hull (10) creates a wave rising at a distance behind a transom (13) of the hull (10), and a screw propeller (20) is mounted rotatably to the hull (10) at a distance from the transom (13) and preferably at a level such that the propeller (20) will be submerged under the crest (41) of the wave when propelling the ship at cruising speed, to enable use of a propeller (20) having a large diameter (D1).The ship may be a single screw propeller ship, a twin screw ship, or a multi propulsive ship.

Abstract

To permit the use of a large diameter propeller (20) extending below the ship's base line (11), the screw propeller (20) is included in a thruster unit or pod unit (6) forming a containerized propulsive unit (6, 60), which is mounted to the hull (10) with the screw propeller (20) at a distance behind the transom (13) where a stern wave crest (40) is formed, and the transom (13) has at least one generally vertical recess (13') for attaching the containerized unit (6), so as to permit the containerized unit (6) to be tilted from a normal cruising position to a position where merely a minor part, or preferably no part,of the rotary screw propeller (20) is located below a base line (11) of the hull (10).

Abstract

This invention relates to a system and method of starting a water jet propulsion system for a ship, said propulsion system including a stator shell (1) adapted to be mounted to the hull and having a nozzle (4) ending in an outlet (5) with a cross-sectional outlet area (A), an impeller housing (6) attached to the stator shell (1) and having an upstream inlet (7), and an impeller rotatably mounted in the impeller housing (6) for receiving water from the inlet (7) and discharging it through the nozzle (4) of the stator shell (1) so as to create a water jet upon rotation of the impeller, said method including reducing the outlet area by partly closing the nozzle (4) during a start up phase of the water jet propulsion system, wherein there is provided a back flow hindering arrangement (8,9; 18), arranged to hinder air to enter into said impeller housing via said nozzle (4).
