A sealing gasket is shown which is designed to be used in making up a sealed pipe joint in a plastic pipeline conveying fluids, such as a water or sewer pipeline. The sealing gasket is a two-component gasket with an elastomeric component and a plastic component. The elastomeric component is stretched over a portion of the plastic component during assembly. Since the two components of the gasket are not permanently bonded to one another, the gasket can be disassembled, allowing various combination s of seal and retainer designs. The gasket can be removed and replace by another gasket after the initial installation. The hard plastic component can be provided with a gripping structure which acts as a restraint mechanism when the sealing gasket is in use.

Method of Manufacturing a Restrained Joint Gasket of Adjustable Length
A method of manufacturing a sealing gasket is shown for use in a pipe sealing system. A pair of mating upper and lower mold plates are provided each having an exposed molding surface in the form of a spiral cavity. A length of pre-extruded elastomeric material in the shape of the near final form of the spiral mold cavity is laid into the mold cavities to substantially fill the cavities. The material may have hardened gripping elements incorporated therein. The upper and lower mold plates are closed to compress the elastomeric material within the spiral cavities and thereafter the material is cured to form a spiral strip. The gripping segments are separated by a gap which is open prior to assembly, but which closes during assembly. Each of the segments also has a positive stop feature to prevent over travel of the male pipe section relative to the female pipe section.

PIPE COUPLING AND USE THEREOF IN JOINING MOLECULARLY ORIENTED PIPE
A method for joining molecularly oriented pipe in which a coupling is provided which is formed of a material other than molecularly oriented pipe, such as ordinary PVC pipe. The coupling if formed as a tubular body with a combination sealing and restraint mechanism located in each of two opposing end openings of the coupling that seal and restrain mating plain spigot ends of the molecularly oriented pipe. Because the coupling is made of a material such as ordinary PVC, the sealing and restraint mechanisms can be installed in internal grooves provided in the coupling interior during normal pipe belling operations without introducing unacceptable levels of stress or strain into the product.
A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron fitting for both sealing and preventing separation of an iron pipe fitting and a mating male pipe. A ring-shaped body is installed within a mating groove provided in a mouth region of the as-cast fitting. The ring-shaped body is an injection molded elastomeric material, carrying gripping segments having teeth on an inner surface thereof designed to engage an outer surface of a mating male pipe. The teeth allow movement of the male pipe in one direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but resist movement in an opposite direction after joint assembly. The gripping segments have shelf regions which are mechanically secured to the elastomeric body of the gasket. The body also includes a relatively flexible portion formed of an elastomer which forms a lip seal region with the mating male pipe.

A ring-shaped body is installed within a mating groove provided in a mouth region of the as-cast fitting after the fitting has been cast at the manufacturing plant. The ring-shaped body is formed of an injection molded elastomeric material and carries a series of gripping segments which have teeth on an inner surface thereof which are designed to engage an outer surface of a mating male pipe. The teeth are oriented to allow movement of the male pipe in a first direction relative to an end opening of the fitting during assembly, but to resist movement in a opposite direction after the fitting joint has been assembled. The gripping segments have shelf regions which are mechanically secured to the elastomeric body of the gasket. The ring-shaped body also includes a relatively flexible portion formed of an elastomer which forms a lip seal region with the mating male pipe.

COMPOSITE SEALING GASKET AND PROCESS FOR BELLING PLASTIC PIPE
An sealing gasket is shown for use in forming joints of plastic pipe. The gasket is formed as a composite elastomeric body with a leading region formed of a thermoplastic elastomer material and with a trailing region formed of a synthetic plastic material. The gasket body has an outer circumferential region provided with a series of recessed pocket which give it a scallop-like appearance. The relatively harder plastic region of the gasket body deforms the associated pipe socket end during manufacture of the pipe end, whereby the gasket is integrally locked within an internal pipe groove in the pipe socket end upon completion of the pipe belling operation.
An sealing gasket is shown for use in forming joints of plastic pipe. The gasket has a bulbous region which is bisected by a planar region which forms a pair of oppositely extending wing-like flaps. These features of the gasket allow it to be more reliably seated on the working mandrel used to bell a female, thermoplastic pipe end. The wing-like flap portions of the gasket form wiper surfaces for a subsequently installed male, spigot pipe end as the joint is formed.
A combination sealing and restraint system for an as-cast ductile iron pipe systems. A ductile iron pipe/fitting with a bell end has an as-cast profile formed therein for receiving both a gripping ring and a sealing ring in spaced apart locations. The gripping ring is installed within a first recess provided as a part of the as-cast profile in a post-casting step. The sealing ring is also installed within a second, spaced recess after the casting operation is complete. The sealing ring can be a dual durometer gasket which can be flexed and inserted into the profile. The same type bell end can be provided as an adapter which converts a traditional mechanical joint restraint to an internal gripping and restrain system.
A manhole assembly for a manhole having generally cylindrical sidewalls defined between an outside surface and an inside surface separated by a wall thickness and having a wall opening communicating the outside and inside sidewall surfaces of the manhole for insertion of a mating pipe. The wall opening defines a peripheral surface relatively perpendicular to the outside and inside sidewall surfaces which receives a ring shaped elastomeric gasket. The gasket has one or more retaining rings which are encapsulated within the material of the gasket body and which allow the gasket to be obliquely inserted within the wall opening of the manhole and to be subsequently snap- fitted into position on the peripheral surface, whereby the gasket is securely retained in a locked-in position with respect to the wall opening in the sidewall of the manhole.

A restrained pipe joining system is shown comprising male and female ends each having aligned circumferential grooves which form a canal for passage of a locking key strap. During manufacture, the female belled end is sequentially formed over a Rieber style gasket and then over a ring shaped casing member having an inner circumferential groove formed on its inner circumferential surface. Preferably, the ring shaped casing has circumferentially spaced teeth that act as a pipe stop in cooperation with an outer circumferential groove on the male spigot to index the pipes to be coupled.

A profiled gasket for sealing tunnel segment joints, which is placed in a receiving groove between segments. The gasket is made of a body of rubber or an elastically deformable synthetic material having an external surface coating which improves the physical properties of the gasket. The coating can be a one-part, room temperature curing hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber base coating
A method is shown for joining and sealing a female plastic pipe end having a belled end opening to a mating male plastic pipe end having an interior surface and an exterior surface. A sealing element is installed within a groove formed in the belled end of the female pipe section. The male pipe end is then inserted into the end opening of the female pipe end so that the elastomeric sealing gasket makes sealing contact with the exterior surface of the male pipe. A control mechanism controls the distance the male pipe travels longitudinally within the end opening of the female plastic pipe to prevent overinsertion of the male pipe within the female pipe opening.
A sealing gasket is shown for use in a ductile iron piping system to form a sealed joint between mating male and female pipe ends. A sealing gasket body is provided with a series of retainer inserts which extend outwardly from a leading nose region of the elastomeric gasket body. The mating male pipe end contacts the retainer inserts prior to contacting the remainder of the gasket body during the make up of the pipe joint. The inserts help to retain the gasket within its associated groove during high pressure field conditions. The inserts are spaced circumferentially about the gasket nose region, allowing the gasket the necessary flexibility to allow insertion within the groove provided in the female, belled pipe end.
