Abstract

An insect trap may include a first housing; a reservoir at least partially defined by the first housing; a protrusion disposed within the reservoir and extending inward from an interior surface of the first housing, the protrusion configured to pierce a package disposed within the reservoir; an actuator connected to the protrusion such that when the actuator is moved, the protrusion moves with the actuator within the reservoir; a second housing moveably engaging the first housing; a trap chamber partially formed by the first and second housings; an inlet into the trap chamber; and wherein the second housing is movable between a first position where the inlet is open and a second position where the inlet is closed. The trap may include a package enclosing an attractant composition. The package has a release rate of the attractant composition from about 5 μg per day to about 500 μg per day.

Abstract

This invention pertains to novel compositions of compounds derived from sugar-containing confections, strawberries, cheese, nuts and lactating female mice and rats. Said compositions can be used alone or in combination with dry-rendered lard and cracklings to attract and induce feeding by mice and rats. A novel composition comprising 2-hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one, butyric acid, 2,3-butadione, 3-methylbutanal, 6-methyl-(E)-2-hepten-4-one, γ-octalactone, dry-rendered lard and cracklings produced during the dry rendering process was superior to a leading commercial bait in attracting and inducing feeding by mice and rats. Said novel compositions can be used in traps designed to capture mice or rats, and can also be used in foodstuffs laced with a rodenticide.

Abstract

This invention relates to methods and devices for releasing the stabilized synthetic 10- component honey bee brood pheromone at controlled rates for up to 36 days, thereby enabling commercialization of the pheromone. The preferred device consists of a small heat-sealed plastic pouch, with one face impermeable, and the other face permeable to the pheromone. The non-volatile pheromone exudes through the permeable membrane face at a constant rate of approximately 0.3 mg per day, provided that the exterior surface of the membrane is cleansed of pheromone daily, either by the human hand or by honey bees. The plastic pouch can be mounted in a firm casing, which can then be placed in a holder such that it is suspended between the frames in a honey bee hive unit, or super. Prototype pheromone-loaded devices placed in hives caused an increase in the ratio of pollen foragers to non-pollen foragers, and also caused increases in the weight of pollen brought back to the hive by foraging worker honey bees, the brood comb area and the numbers of adult bees.
