Abstract
A shielding device, and a device for distributing charging material into a furnace or reactor enclosure are disclosed. A charging chute for directing material into the enclosure is movable relative to the enclosure throughout a distribution trajectory, and a housing defines an aperture, the aperture receiving the chute, the chute and the housing defining at least one excursion channel from the enclosure. A chute shielding means comprises a plurality of shielding elements arranged to block the excursion channel such that at any given point in the trajectory of the chute, at least one of said elements spans a portion of the excursion channel.

Abstract
Apparatus for descaling metal in plate mills, particularly metal ingots of varying thickness. Two headers (1,2) bearing spray nozzles (17) are arranged above the metal with a mutual offset such that the sprays from the first header (1) are centered on different regions of the metal than are the sprays on the second header (2). The regions sprayed by the first header (1) overlap with those sprayed by the second header (2), the degree of overlap depending on the metal thickness and hence stand off distance of the nozzles.

Abstract
A fully hydraulic edging system suitable for use in wide plate mills is disclosed. The need for electro-mechanical screws to effect large movements of the side rollers (2) is avoided by employing a pull-back hydraulic cylinder (10) for this purpose. The main hydraulic cylinders (12) are switched to a non-operational mode during large movements thus avoiding the need for large volumes of hydraulic fluid to be transferred under high pressure.

Abstract
The disclosed invention is a new concept for controlling the flatness of the strip during the rolling of aluminium strip or foil (2). The system consists of a full width bank of cryogenic roll cooling devices (7) acting on the roll (s) (4) and a full width bank of roll heating devices (8) also acting on the roll(s). Both or either of the cooling and heating banks are divided into individually controllable zones. A process automation system controls the action of the cooling and heating banks via feedback from a strip shape meter (9) and / or a predictive process model, in order, by thermal growth / contraction, to create the best roll profile for rolling flat strip.

Abstract
An electrostatic discharge nozzle is described having two concentrically arranged cylindrical portions (2, 3). At least one of the portions (2, 3) has radial thickness that decreases along its axial length to a minimum value near the discharge end. This arrangement provides for an enhanced electric field at the point of discharge giving rise to an improved, fined spray pattern.

Abstract
Rolling cut metal shearing apparatus is described in which the starting and, or end position of a shear blade (2) is varied according to the width, position and thickness of material to be cut (1), thereby optimising the stroke of the blade (2) for the material dimensions. This provides for shorter cutting times, reduced volumes of hydraulic fluid and increased throughput.

Abstract
A metal shearing apparatus is described in which the fixed side link, normally used to control lateral movement of the upper blade assembly, is replaced with an adjustable side link (9). The length adjustable side link (9) is variable during the cutting action, allowing for an improved rolling action with minimal slippage. The adjustable side link (9) may be implemented as a hydraulic cylinder.

Abstract
A metal shearing method and apparatus is described in which the cutting cycle includes a cut in two directions (e.g. left to right and then righ to left) rather than the conventional cut in one direction fallowed by a reset of the shear blade (2) t a startinf position ready for the next cut, This gives rise to increased throughput and reduced volumes of hydraulic fluid.

Abstract
A metal shearing machine is disclosed wherein a piston (8) has a valve (11) and conduits (12) embedded therein so that when the piston (8) moves within a cylinder in a non-operating mode (for example when the piston (8) follows the movement of a component being driven by other means) the valve (11) can be opened to allow hydraulic fluid to pass from one side of the valve to the other. Location of the valve (11) within the piston (8) eliminates the need for external fluid connections to the cylinder.

Abstract
A conduit for charging a blast furnace comprises a conduit comprising one or more frusto-conical sections for directing charging material into the furnace and employs a 'ski jump' type feature on the chute to provide for an improved trajectory of charging material after it leaves the conduit. The conduit is m ounted on a gimbal or other universal type joint which allows direction of the conduit to different areas within the blast furnace without rotation.

Abstract
A method, and an apparatus, for operating a hydraulic shearing machine are provided comprising for cutting a shearing-movement of at least one shear blade (17) which is curved, starting from a starting-position under application of an overall actuating-force and for resetting of the shear blades which were moved for cutting to their starting-position after accomplishment of the shearing-movement a reset-movement under application of an overall reset-force, the shearing-movement and the reset-movement being accomplished by a hydraulic actuating-mechanism comprising hydraulic cylinders (21, 22, 23, 24) and the overall actuating-force and the overall reset-force being applied to the moved shear blades by at least one hydraulic cylinder of the actuating-mechanism. The magnitude of the overall actuating-force is adjustable by switching one or several hydraulic cylinders of the actuating-mechanism in and out of operation-mode. The method proposes that the position of the curved shear blade are controlled by a control system by regulating the flow of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic cylinders according to setpoints for a shear blade position versus time function and the overall actuating-force and overall reset- force requirements.

Abstract
Method for thermo-mechanical controlled rolling of metal slabs to plates or strips, in which for two successively rolled slabs the time gap between the starts of their rolling phases 1 is always smaller than the sum of the duration of all rolling phases and all cooling phases of the rolling pattern, and in which during rolling the batch it occurs on at least one rolling mill stand several times that a rolling phase applied to one slab or plate or strip is succeeded by a different rolling phase applied on another slab or plate or strip. In the apparatus for thermo-mechanical rolling according to that method the number of storage positions is half the interleave depth of the performed rolling pattern rounded up to an integer.

Abstract
The invention relates to the field of controlled cooling of hot plate or strip shaped metal. An apparatus for the controlled cooling and a control method is proposed. The apparatus comprises a header fitted with a first valve (7), whereas the valves (7) allows air to escape from the header and prevent cooling fluid to escape from the header (1) when being filled and prevent air from getting back into the header. During operation due to the apparatus an improved operation even at low flow rates is possible.

Abstract
The invention relates to a roll bending device for the control of profile and flatness in the rolling of metal plates or strips. In particular the invention relates to the well known principle of roll bending by using hydraulic cylinders to modify the load distribution between rolls of a rolling mill stand and a rolled stock e.g. a metal plate or a strip in order to control the profile and flatness of the metal plate or strip. A special design to allow safe roll bending even at large roll gauges is presented. The new design allows safe operation even at large roll gauges and high side loads.

Abstract
The invention relates to a method for slag granulation, whereby molten slag is converted to slag sand by water jets, the slag sand is drained in a draining plant (4) by drawing off coarse slag sand using at least one conveying screw (4a) that is mounted at an angle in a first sedimentation basin (4c) and feeding overflow water from the first sedimentation basin (4c) to a second sedimentation basin (5), and returning the overflow water to the slag granulation process. The invention also relates to a corresponding device. The invention is characterized in that fine slag sand is sedimented in the second sedimentation basin (5) and the sedimented fine slag sand is directly supplied to the draining area of the conveying screw (4a) of the first sedimentation basin (4c).
