There is disclosed a thermal energy storage and supply method that includes providing subcooled water to a pressure vessel; heating liquid water within the pressure vessel using an electrically-powered heater so that the vessel contains saturated liquid water and steam at a variable storage pressure; controlling the heater to raise the storage pressure to a peak storage pressure of at least 2 MPa; and selectively discharging steam from an outlet of the pressure vessel to a thermal load, in response to a thermal energy demand, such that during a depletion period the storage pressure reduces by at least 1 MPa from the peak storage pressure.

There is disclosed a thermal energy storage and supply method comprising: providing subcooled water to a pressure vessel (110); heating liquid water within the pressure vessel using an electrically-powered heater so that the vessel contains saturated liquid water and steam at a variable storage pressure; controlling the heater (112) to raise the storage pressure to a peak storage pressure of at least 2 MPa; and selectively discharging steam from an outlet of the pressure vessel to a thermal load (130, 40), in response to a thermal energy demand, such that during a depletion period the storage pressure reduces by at least 1 MPa from the peak storage pressure.
A method of cooling a heating apparatus includes a heating chamber. The method includes accumulating condensate in the heating chamber, monitoring a pressure in the heating chamber, and controlling the pressure in the heating chamber by venting the heating chamber to thereby controllably permit vaporisation of the condensate that cools the heating chamber. The pressure is controlled to maintain a rate of cooling of the heating chamber within a predetermined range. A heating installation is configured to perform the method. A cooling unit may be connected to a heating apparatus to cool the heating apparatus using the method. A method may be used for retrofitting the cooling unit to a heating apparatus to form the heating installation.

A differential pressure metering apparatus includes a manifold for fluidically coupling impulse lines. There is disclosed a method of cooling a heating apparatus comprising a heating chamber. A vent head for a steam system is provided. In one embodiment, the vent head may comprise a body defining a vent head chamber and having a vent head outlet. The vent head comprises a steam inlet conduit having a steam outlet that opens into the vent head chamber and a baffle disposed within the vent head chamber and above the steam outlet. The indicator may comprise a coating of a heat sensitive material which changes appearance, for example by changing colour, in the event of a rise in the temperature of the outer pipe caused by failure of the vacuum.
