Abstract

A wheelchair comprises a base frame, a backrest frame and a hinge assembly. The base frame has first and second side frame members. The hinge assembly connects the backrest frame to a portion of the base frame for selective pivotal movement. The hinge assembly includes a locking mechanism configured to provide selective discrete locking positions of the backrest relative to the base frame. The locking mechanism includes a locking pin and a plurality of cooperating locking apertures. The locking pin is adapted to selectively engage one of the plurality of locking apertures to define a backrest angle relative to the base frame. One or more plugs are adapted to engage one or more of the plurality of locking apertures to prevent the locking pin from cooperating with the plugged locking aperture.

Abstract

A wheelchair frame includes left and right frame members (9, 10), each including at least a first leg (11, 12) for supporting a seat, arranged on opposite sides of a central axis aligned with a direction of displacement (d) of the wheelchair, in use. At least one cross- brace (19) is connected to the first legs (11, 12) of the left and right frame members (9, 10) at its ends, and has a non-circular cross-section along at least a section (34) between the ends. Alternatively, the wheelchair frame further includes left and right second frame members (29, 30), pivotably connected to the left and right frame members (9,10) and arrestable in a position in which they are oriented in a direction predominantly parallel to the first legs (11, 12) of the left and right frame members (9, 10). In that case, at least one cross-brace (33) is connected to the left and right second frame members (29, 30) at its ends, and has a non-circular cross-section along at least a section (37) between its end.

Abstract

A method of manufacturing a member (9, 10) of a wheelchair frame includes providing a tubular member (29). The tubular member (29) is bent into a desired shape. A cross-sectional shape of at least a section of the tubular member (30) is adjusted. The step of adjusting the cross-sectional shape is carried out after the step of bending the tubular member (29) into the desired shape. A wheelchair frame includes left and right tubular frame members (9, 10) for supporting a seat, each including a curved section (15, 16). At least the curved section (15, 16) has a non-circular cross-sectional shape.
