Abstract

Butters are a specific class of cosmetic triglycerides that provide a unique feel on skin. There are very few such materials in nature. In order for a butter to be of interest to the personal care market, it must be (1) soft at room temperature; (2) must not “crack” when handled; (3) must be able to be applied to the skin at ambient temperature by rubbing; (4) must liquefy upon rubbing, (5) must be free of rancidity and (6) must be free of trans acids that are the result of partial hydrogenation. For unsaturated oils to be made into butters, partial hydrogenation is the most common approach. This results in the formation of trans acids which are highly undesirable. The present invention discloses a series of non-hydrogenated butters made by a process referred to as totally randomized triglycerides. The butters are made using a very specific range of very specific types and ratios of fatty acids to glycerin to provide the highly desirable cosmetic butters meeting the requirements 1-5 above.

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a series of glycerin based polymers that have been designed to have very specific substitution patterns, herein referred to as regiospecific substitution (RSS). The attachment of terminal mono-functional silicone polymers engineered polyesters of glycerin results in heretofore unrecognized products. The unique properties include lower surface tension, better spreadability and a dry skin feel, all of which cannot be attained without the use of a terminal silicone. Incorporation of silicone into the terminal position requires a very specific synthesis regime to establish the sought after regiospecificity.

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a series of glycerin polysilicones. By glycerin polysilicones in meant polymers that have silicone portions that are functionalized with glycerin groups. The polymers of the present invention can range from relatively low molecular weight (around 600 daltons) to higher molecular weight (of about 2,500 daltons). The presence of the glyceryl groups together with the silicone groups allows for the preparation of molecules uniquely suited to personal care applications, more specifically, skin care products.

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a series of polyesters that are made by the reaction of a diacid with a pre-formed mono-hydroxy, di-hydroxy and optionally a tri-hydroxy ester of polyols selected from pentaerythritol, di pentearythritol trimethylolpropane and mixtures thereof. Abstract

The present invention is aimed at a series of novel glycerin polyesters that provide desired aesthetics and structure in cosmetic formulation. These glycerin polymers are synthesized by polycondensation polymerization, in the presence of a monofunctional monomer or terminal group. By carefully choosing the groups the properties can be dramatically altered. The mono-functional alcohols, being only able to react in one position, can only be located on the polymer chain ends. This provides very unique polymer structure and morphology. These regiospecific polyesters will have very unique physical properties and have a wide variety of solubilities. Furthermore, by the incorporation of a co-monomer will produce a copolymer with drastically different solubilities and aesthetics.

Abstract

The present invention is directed toward a series of silicone/organic polymers with tunable ascetics, solubility, film formation and performance in cosmetic formulation. These novel polymers are designed with the three different hydroxyl containing monomers in the polyester. One is a siliphillic (silicone loving) and the other a oleophillic (oil loving) and the last hydrophilic (water loving). It is critical for there to be all three types of monomers linked together in a single polymer in order to make polymers in which solubility, spreadability, surface tension and film hardness can be altered for different cosmetic applications. When these groups are present a polymer there is a wide range of variation possible, making these polymers formulator friendly. The physical and chemical properties, including but not limited to: film formation of the current invention can be tuned rapidly by controlling the fatty group used, the degree of polymerization of the polymer, the molecular weight of the silicone polymer, the presence of ethylene oxide in the polymer backbone and the ratio of monomers to one another.

The present invention is directed to a series of citrate ester emulsifiers that are effective in making water in oil (regular emulsions) and oil in water (invert emulsions). In addition to being outstanding emulsifiers, these emulsifiers provide unique solubility, liquidity and outstanding feel when applied to the skin, making them highly desirable in cosmetic emulsions.

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a series of silicone containing polymeric glyceryl esters that have two different molecular weight ester chains, one solid and one liquid, which when combined into a single molecule make a polymer that is solid, but has very unique flow properties. These materials find applications as additives to formulations in personal care products where there is a desire to have a structured film (provided by the solid fatty group) and flow properties, (provided by the liquid fatty group). These compounds by virtue of their unique structure provide outstanding skin feel.

Abstract

The present invention is directed toward a series of polyesters with tunable ascetics and skin conditioning properties for use in cosmetic formulation, specifically sun screening formulations in which the performance is improved by a synergistic effect between the sunscreening actives and the polyester. These novel polyglycerol polyesters are designed to be multidimensional. The physical properties and aesthetics of the current invention can be tuned rapidly by controlling the ratio of fatty groups, as well as the cross-linker used. The resulting polyglycerol polyesters have outstanding aesthetics and physical properties.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for diagnosing a particular type of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), HBx/8p11-positive HCC, in a subject by detecting the presence of a specific, non-naturally occurring polynucleotide sequence that indicates integration of a portion of the human hepatitis B virus (HBV) sequence into the human genome on chromosome 8 in the 8p11 integration region. A kit and device useful for such a method are also provided. In addition, the present invention provides a method for treating an HBx/8p11-positive HCC.

Abstract

The present invention is drawn to a process for providing emolliency to the skin using a series so called “spider esters”. These esters are derived from poly-hydroxy functional compounds sequentially reacted with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, followed by the reaction of the alkoxylate with fatty acid. The resulting products are called spider esters because they resemble the spider, wherein appendages are alkoxylated esters. The restrictions this orientation imposes on rotation allows for the preparation of polar esters that have little or no water solubility, and provide both moisturization to the skin and emolliency by reducing transepidermal water loss.
