Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and system for monitoring cardiac functions and quantifying objective, operator-independent indices of cardiac functions. The invention quantifies both ventricle cavity and wall dynamics. It provides a picture with a comprehensive view of the six phases of cardiac contraction, relaxation and filling (isovolumic contraction, ejection, isovolumic relaxation, rapid filling, diastasis and atrial kick). It enables to quantify the effect of respiration and mechanical ventilation on cardiac chamber loadings and thereby to optimize mechanical ventilation in the general and cardiac intensive care units. It enables to assess the phase differences between the electrical activations and mechanical contractions of the various chambers and thus to adjust and optimize the parameters of cardiac synchronization therapies of ventricle chambers and chamber walls (as cardiac resynchronization therapy).

Abstract

The present invention relates to systems for identifying one or more ions in a liquid solution, including a solid surface configured to be in contact with the liquid solution; a mechanical wave generator configured to be in contact with the solid surface and/or with the liquid solution; and a working microelectrode configured to be positioned in the liquid solution in close proximity to the solid surface without contacting it. Methods of the invention include generating a mechanical wave which propagates and excites ions of an electrical double layer (EDL) formed at an interface between the solid surface and the liquid solution, thereby causing the EDL to vibrate and to leak an electrical field. The electrode measures electrical potential of the electrical field over time, which yields a voltage spectrum comprising amplitude and phase which are indicative of an identity and a concentration of the one or more ions in the liquid solution.

Abstract

Nanostructured electrodes comprising nanoparticles of conductive material deposited on a conductive electrode support are described in the present invention. Said nanoparticles are characterised by a particle size of about 20.0 nm or less and a particle size distribution having a tuneable standard deviation from ±0.1 nm to ±1.0 nm. This particle size distribution is measured using a differential mobility analyser. The nanostructured electrodes are manufactured by the method of spark ablation, which provides a scalable and viable way for producing widely different types of mixed nanoparticles. Most importantly, implementation of the spark ablation has the great advantage to combine a wider range of materials, thereby allowing the synthesis of mixed nanoparticles with virtually unlimited combinations and highly sharp particle size distribution control which is advantageous for high tunability of selectivity.

Abstract

A device for signal acquisition, comprises a transimpedance amplifier having an input receiving a current from an input device, an output to supply an output voltage reflective of the current; and a memristor component connected in a feedback path of the transimpedance amplifier, the memristor component transitioning between a high resistive state and a low resistive state depending on a voltage difference across the memristor component. The gain of the transimpedance amplifier is reduced as the increase in current approaches a saturation level of the amplifier and triggers the transition. The result is an increase in dynamic range of the transimpedance amplifier to better match the range of current output that may be expected from say an optical input device.

Abstract

A principle which enables the generation of macroscopic Fock and sub-Poissonian states is disclosed. Generic components of the system include: an electromagnetic structure (possessing one or more electromagnetic resonances), a nonlinear electromagnetic element (such as a nonlinear crystal near or inside the structure), and a source of light. In one embodiment, stimulated gain is used to create large numbers of photons in a cavity, but with very low photon number noise (uncertainty) in the cavity, and thus acts as a Fock laser. This Fock laser is capable of producing these states due to a very sharp intensity-dependent gain (or loss) that selects a particular photon number. The disclosed system and method are robust against both atomic and optical decoherence. Various examples of the new Fock laser design are also described.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a novel configuration of a fluid pressurization nozzle which is relatively simple in its mechanical design for attaining an isothermal or quasi-isothermal pressurization process of fluid, e.g., isothermal or quasi-isothermal compression of gas. The fluid pressurization nozzle of the present disclosure utilizes the general principles of an expanding-contracting nozzle (e.g., Venturi nozzle), which is modified for eliminating or significantly attenuating generation of shock waves in the nozzle to thereby facilitate efficient compression of the gas. The fluid pressurization nozzle of the present disclosure has a profile defining a varying cross-section along a length thereof. As such, the fluid pressurization nozzle is configured for affecting / manipulating characteristics / properties of fluid(s) propagating therealong. Such properties can include, inter alia, pressure, Mach number, velocity, and temperature. Optionally, and in some embodiments preferably, the fluid compression nozzle of the present disclosure is configured to pressurize suction fluid (e.g., gas) introduced thereinto, with the aid of a heat transfer liquid (HTL) propagating / flowing therealong. The introduced suction fluid is mixed with the HTL to form a liquid/gas mixture in which the gas is pressurized.

Abstract

A method for reconstructing spatial information, the method includes: (i) Obtaining an under-sampled frequency domain representation (FDR) of the spatial information. The under-sampled FDR was obtained by sampling an FDR of the spatial information with a sampling mask. (ii) Feeding the under-sampled FDR and the sampling mask to a machine learning process. (iii) Reconstructing the spatial information by the machine learning process. The machine learning process was trained using a training data set that includes training under-sampled FRDs of training spatial information, and one or more training sampling masks that were used to sample FDRs of training spatial information.
