Abstract

The present invention relates to powered fastener drivers. The designs of conventional fastener drivers are met with power, size, and cost constraints. The present invention provides a method of operating a powered fastener driver having a cylinder, a drive piston within the cylinder having a drive blade, and a reciprocating piston within the cylinder through which the drive blade is extendable. The method includes: maintaining the drive piston within the cylinder at a top dead center position; moving the reciprocating piston away from the drive piston at a first speed while the drive piston is maintained at the top dead center position; detecting the reciprocating piston with a monitoring system prior to the reciprocating piston reaching a bottom dead center position within the cylinder; and decelerating the reciprocating piston from the first speed in response to being detected.

Abstract

A pneumatic fastener driver, contains a cylinder (46), a piston (40), a motor (32), a rack (38), and a magnetic latch. The piston (40) is positioned within the cylinde r(46) and moveable between a top-dead-center position and a bottom-dead-center position. The rack (38) is coupled to the piston and operable to drive the piston to move within the cylinder. The rack is driven by the motor via a pinion (36). The magnetic latch emits a magnetic field that magnetically attracts the piston and is capable of holding the piston in the top-dead-center position with a magnetic force, wherein the magnetic latch is adjustable to vary the magnetic force acting on the piston for driving fasteners into a workpiece at different depths. By using the magnetic latch and the length-configurable latch in the pneumatic fastener driver, it enables a convenient method of adjusting the driving depth of the fastener which is driven by the fastener driver. Also, use of the rack and pinion assembly results in reduction of the overall size of the pneumatic fastener driver.

Abstract

In an angle-grinder with a rotating handle and a latch for fixing the handle in two different rotational positions, an interlock mechanism is provided for greater security against unwanted rotation of the handle when the tool is being used. The interlock mechanism is moved to a locking position by depressing the trigger to start the motor, and thus provides a safety lock backing up the latch, in case the latch is accidentally released during use. In its unlocking position the interlock mechanism may prevent actuation of the trigger when the handle is not properly aligned in one of its operating positions.
