Abstract
An output module for an industrial controller provides electrical isolation between each of the output terminals in the module. The output module receives control signals from the industrial controller indicating a desired output state for each of the output terminals and selectively connects power from the output of the electrical isolation to the output terminal. During normal operation, a switching device connects the power to the output terminal responsive to the control signal. A current sensor monitors the current conducted at the output terminal. If the current exceeds a predefined threshold, a current limit circuit clamps the current being output at the terminal. A control circuit may allow the output terminal to ride through a temporary spike in current or disable the output terminal if a fault condition is detected.

Abstract
An input circuit for detecting low voltage analog signals in an electrically noisy environment receives the analog input signal at an input terminal. The analog input signal is compared to a variable reference signal at a comparator circuit. An active hysteresis circuit provides feedback to the comparator. In a first operating mode, the active hysteresis circuit may be disabled or be configured to output a constant voltage. In a second operating mode, the active hysteresis circuit may be enabled or configured to output a varying level of voltage. The output of the feedback circuit is summed with the variable reference signal and supplied as the input signal to the comparator, such that signal against which the analog input signal is compared is a general constant value in the first operating mode and varies with respect to time in the second operating mode.

Abstract
This disclosure regards a self-keying system for an input/output (I/O) device. An I/O module mountable on a terminal base exchanges I/O signals with external devices via the terminal base. The I/O module comprises a key, and the terminal base comprises a locking assembly to allow insertion of only compatible I/O modules into the terminal base. The locking assembly comprises parallel slots containing a plurality of lock pins movable in the slots between a biased position and a second position. A blocking member is actuated by the key to block each of the lock pins in their respective position to key the base. A maintaining member maintains the blocking member in the keyed position. After keying, a non-compatible key would be rejected from the locking assembly due to the blocked lock pins. A reset to the unkeyed configuration may be accomplished without the use of tools by actuating the maintaining member.

An electrical relay system is configured to allow for failure detection of a relay by injecting a signal at a common contact of the relay and looking for the signal at a normally closed contact of the relay. If the relay is commanded to be “off,” or closed, and the injected signal is not detected through the normally closed contact of the relay, then the system can determine that a failure condition has occurred. In one aspect, the system can include multiple relays with the signal being injected at a common node of the relays. Abstract
Present embodiments include a system and method for providing an input-driven, switching-enabled display device for an automation controller. The display device may include a communication interface port, such as a universal serial bus (USB) port, which is installed in the display device so that it may be easily accessible by a user. The port may increase a user's productivity and efficiency by reducing the time it takes to connect a PC to the automation controller. The display device may also include an interface switch that performs display functionality or port adapter functionality based upon whether a port connection and/or port communication traffic are detected. Thus, embodiments may enable the display device to act as both a text display and a gateway to configure the automation controller with a personal computer (PC) through the use of the easy access port.

Abstract
Aspects of the present invention provide machines, systems, and methods in which industrial control systems may be secured from compromise and/or disruption via authentication and firewall. In particular, an industrial controller may: randomly generate an exchange key and send the exchange key to a client device in response to a transaction request originating from the client device; combine the exchange key with a locally stored pass key to produce an authentication code; and compare a challenge key received from the client device to the authentication code to determine a match between the challenge key and the authentication code. A successful match between the challenge key and the authentication code may allow the client device to further access the industrial controller using a common industrial protocol (CIP), and a failed match between the challenge key and the authentication code may prevent the client device from further access to the industrial controller.

Abstract
An I/O circuit for measuring temperatures uses multiple cold-junction compensation sensors permanently affixed near the terminals of the terminal block in order to compensate significant temperature variation across the terminals of the I/O module (up to 3° C.) that can substantially affect the accuracy of thermocouple measurements. The use of these multiple sensors is enabled by a compensation system that corrects for the distance between the built-in sensors and the terminals, a multiplexer that accommodates the additional signal burden produced by the sensors, and a compensation system that allows low-cost sensors to be used and calibrated to as little as a single high accuracy sensor. In one embodiment, a third temperature sensor with relatively higher accuracy is used to compensate for lower accuracy of permanently affixed sensors.
