Abstract

Gravity powered electrical energy generators, particularly for producing lighting is disclosed. The apparatus has a support frame (1, 30) in which a series of gears and a gear-driven generator (20) are mounted. The power to drive the most upstream gear (2) is provided by a weight suspended from a point to one side of the axis of rotation of gear (2). The drive gear of the furthest downstream gear has no teeth so that the final contact between the drive gear and the shaft of the generator (20) is frictional. The gear ratio of the final downstream gear is at least 25. When used for lighting, the apparatus may include one or more high brightness LEDs (40) mounted on the housing (30). By suitable choice of gear ratios, the device may produce thirty minutes of illumination while allowing a 10 kilogram weight to fall through a distance of 1.8 metres.

Abstract

An adjustable size chair structure is described. The chair has a base frame (61, 62) with a first pair of upwardly and rearwardly extending forward frame members and a second pair of upwardly extending frame members (62) mounted behind the first on to which are respectively slidably mounted a seat back (70) and seat portion (63). Where they intersect, a linking mechanism is provided, for example a flange (75) laterally of the seat portion and a slide block (73) with a groove angled relative to the direction of telescopic movement of the back (70) on the frame member (61). This ensures that both back and seat portions (70, 63) move together, either to move the seat back (70) upwards and rearwards as the seat portion (63) is moved upwards and forwards or vice versa. A locking mechanism (78) may hold the seat at the desired size.

Abstract

A treatment process using a washing machine comprises, as a preliminary step, locating a desired quantity of treatment agent (30) and water (32) in a container (20) and subjecting the treatment agent and water to ultrasound to dissolve or disperse the treatment agent evenly throughout the body of water. The contents of the container may then be emptied into the machine - either into the drum or into a standard detergent-receiving drawer - or the entire container with the dispersed treatment agent in it, may be placed in the drum, in the fashion of a "washing ball".
