Abstract

Methods of preparing a polymerization catalyst component is provided, in which a magnesium component, a Lewis acid solubilizing component, a titanium compound, optionally a transition metal compound different than the titanium compound, and typically an inert filler are combined in a slurrying agent and spray-dried to produce a catalyst precursor in the form of a substantially spherical and porous solid particle. The methods and catalysts of this disclosure can provide ethylene homopolymer and copolymer resins having a high molecular weight tail and a broadened molecular weight distribution as compared to more traditional Ziegler-Natta catalysts.

Abstract

A method for monitoring a chromatograph used to control production of a chemical product. The method involves sampling a chemical mixture of chemical components used during the production to form the chemical product, measuring the composition of the sample with a chromatograph and adjusting the amount of the chemical components based on the measured composition. The method also involves measuring actual parameters of the sample with at least one gauge, determining expected parameters of the sample based on the measured composition and the measured actual parameters using an equation-of-state, and detecting a fault in the chromatograph by comparing the expected parameters with the actual parameters.

Abstract

2, and X are as defined herein. In some embodiments, an AGE and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) are first reacted to produce an ethylenically unsaturated aminocarboxylic acid monomer, which is then polymerized with at least one carboxylic acid monomer to produce the polymer having Formula I. Alternatively, an AGE is polymerized with at least one carboxylic acid monomer to produce a polymer, which is then reacted to graft IDA thereon to form the polymer having Formula I.

The method also involves measuring actual parameters of the sample with at least one gauge, determining expected parameters of the sample based on the measured composition and the measured actual parameters using an equation-of-state, and detecting a fault in the chromatograph by comparing the expected parameters with the actual parameters.

Abstract

Disclosed is a crosslinkable mixture comprising a polyolefin, an alkoxysilane, an organopolysiloxane, a free radical initiator and a liquid polymer modifier. The organopolysiloxane contains two or more hydroxyl end groups. When the crosslinkable mixture is melt-shaped, a unique crosslinked composition is formed. The liquid polymer modifier improves flexibility of the melt-shaped article without decreasing dielectric strength.

Abstract

Disclosed are polymeric compositions with improved breakdown strength. The polymeric compositions contain a polyolefin and a voltage stabilizing agent. The voltage stabilizing agent contains a triazine. The triazine may include a substituent that enables keto-enol tautomerism, which provides the voltage stabilizing agent with additional energy dissipation capacity. The present polymeric compositions exhibit improved breakdown strength when applied as an insulating layer for power cable.

Abstract

Silane-grafted polyolefin composition comprising a brominated, flame retardant additive is prepared by a process comprising the step of contacting within a reaction—extrusion zone operated at grafting conditions: A. A polyolefin, B. A hydrolysable unsaturated silane, C. A free radical generator, and D. Halogenated polyaryl alkane, e.g., decabromodiphenyl ethane, such that at least a portion of the hydrolysable unsaturated silane is grafted to the polyolefin. The silane-grafted polyolefin is crosslinked after extrusion from the zone, typically as a wire and cable coating, upon exposure to moisture.

Abstract

Free radically crosslinked, electrically conductive compositions exhibiting a highly stable volume resistivity comprise an olefin multiblock copolymer (OBC) and a conductive filler, e.g., a conductive carbon black. These compositions exhibit a highly stable volume resistivity relative to a composition similar in essentially all aspects save that the OBC is replaced with a conventional polyethylene of similar density and melt index.

Abstract

The present invention provides catalyst compositions useful for transamination reactions. The catalyst compositions have a catalyst support that includes transitional alumina, use a low metal loading (for example, less than 25 wt. %), and do not require the presence of rhenium. The catalyst compositions are able to advantageously promote transamination of a reactant product (such as the transamination of EDA to DETA) with excellent activity and selectivity, and similar to transaminations promoted using a precious metal-containing catalyst.

Abstract

Thiobis phenolic antioxidants are efficiently dry or melt blended with a tree-resistant, crosslinkable polyethylene by first forming a blend, preferably a dry blend, of the antioxidant with a polyalkylene glycol (PAG), and then mixing the blend with the polyethylene. The incorporation of thiobis phenolic antioxidant and PAG blend into polyethylene provides the PE with high oxidative induction time (OIT) which is a measure of the oxidative stability of the PE.

Abstract

The present invention provides strategies for making cyclic triamines. Reactant media including certain precursors and/or certain types of catalysts can be converted into cyclic triamines with improved conversion and selectivity. The strategies can be incorporated into reactions that involve transamination schemes and/or reductive amination schemes. In the case of transamination, for instance, using transamination to cause ring closure of higher amines in the presence of a suitable catalyst leads to desired cyclic triamines with notable conversion and yield. In the case of reductive amination, reacting suitable polyfunctional precursors in the presence of a suitable catalyst also yields cyclic triamines via ring closure with notable selectivity and conversion. Both transamination and reductive amination methodologies can be practiced under much milder temperatures than are used when solely acid catalysts are used. Preferred embodiments can produce reaction mixtures that are generally free of salt by-products.

Abstract

The invention provides a method of transaminating a reactant with a catalyst composition comprising support and catalyst portions. The support includes an acidic mixed metal oxide including a transitional alumina and a second metal oxide. The transitional alumina can comprise delta or theta alumina, in combination with other transitional phases, or an alpha or gamma alumina. The second metal oxide has a weight percentage less than the weight percentage of alumina. The catalyst portion is 25 weight percent or less of the catalyst composition and is composed of nickel and rhenium. The catalyst portion includes nickel in an amount in the range of 2 to 20 weight percent, based upon total catalyst composition weight, and there is no boron in the catalyst portion. The method provides high activity and selectivity for reactant transamination to a desired product while minimizing the formation of unwanted cyclic products.

Abstract

Crosslinked, melt-shaped articles are manufactured by a process that does not require the use of post-shaping external heat or moisture, the process comprising the steps of: A. Forming a crosslinkable mixture of a 1. Organopolysiloxane containing one or more functional end groups; and 2. Silane-grafted or silane-copolymerized polyolefin; and B. Melt-shaping and partially crosslinking the mixture; and C. Cooling and continuing crosslinking the melt-shaped article. Crosslinking is promoted by the addition of a catalyst to the mixture before or during melt-shaping or to the melt-shaped article.
