Abstract

Methods described herein relate to a partial reduction of esters to aldehydes or nitrogen-containing products facilitated by Group IV transition metal catalysts, using hydrosilanes as the reductant. The method allows the product to be preserved at the aldehyde oxidation level rather than over-reduction to the corresponding alcohol and can result in the formation of value-added recycled monomers. Methods described herein can be used for the direct catalytic chemical upcycling of polyester plastic waste through depolymerization transformations.

Abstract

The disclosure provides a system and method for ultrasonic non-destructive testing to monitor the curing process of a resin and filled resin materials during manufacture. The inventors have discovered that ultrasound parameters revealed in ultrasonic signal analysis reveals the degree of cure and therefore important curing stages during processing for a proper cure and allow the product to perform as intended. Generally, the ultrasound parameters include signal speed of sound and/or instantaneous peak power relative to wall-clock time of the ultrasound signal. The system and method can monitor the cure of resin and filled resin materials using instantaneous data without the need for previous data for that individual scan, can use ultrasound portably such that carbon fiber laminates can be monitored in-situ, and is conducive to isothermal cure or cure using a varying temperature profile. Thus, the invention represents a step in manufacturing of resin-curing products heretofore unavailable.

Abstract

The disclosure provides a diamagnetically stabilized magnetically levitated gravimeter and related method that allows measurements of relative gravity in a simple, low power consumption device based on a magnetic levitation principle using permanent magnets instead of using a mechanical spring. The gravimeter uses magnetic forces to balance a float magnet against the force of gravity, allowing for accurate measurements. The gravimeter includes a float magnet that floats between two diamagnetic materials, such as diamagnetic plates, without a need for external energy input due to the interaction between the magnetic forces of the float magnet lifted by the lift magnet but stabilized between upper and lower diamagnetic materials. The gravimeter is less sensitive to drift in response to stresses than a mechanical spring, have a lower temperature sensitivity, and lower energy and power requirements to take similarly reliable gravity measurements, which in turn simplify deployment and prolong operational lifetime.

Abstract

A secondary borane featuring two ortho-carborane substituents [HBoCb2, oCb=ortho-carborane] is useful as a powerful hydroboration reagent. The Lewis superacid, bis(1-methyl-ortho-carboranyl)borane, is rapidly accessed in two steps. It is a very effective hydroboration reagent capable of the hydroboration of alkenes, alkynes, cyclopropanes, and allenes. The large steric profile prevents double hydroboration of alkynes and promotes regioselectivity in allenes. The compound is a Lewis superacidic secondary borane and effective neutral hydroboration reagent.

Abstract

Equipotent indolocarbazole-derived analogs of staurosporine identified herein are prepared through C—H borylation chemistry. Functionality resides at C2 and C10 of the indolocarbazole aromatic region. Introducing functionality in this previously inaccessible region does not abrogate kinase activity and is shown to change the selectivity profile.

Abstract

A disclosed radio frequency (RF) system, such as a cognitive radar, includes a software defined radio (SDR), an adaptive transmit amplifier, and a host computer. The system performs optimization operations including selecting an initial impedance as a load impedance for the RF device and iteratively performing image completion operations until a convergence criterion is satisfied. The image completion operations may include measuring a performance of the RF device to obtain a measured performance corresponding to the load impedance, storing the measured performance as a point on a measured load-pull contour image, performing a load-pull extrapolation to extrapolate, from the load impedance, a predicted optimal impedance, and saving the predicted impedance as the load impedance for a next iteration of the image completion operations. The convergence criterion may be satisfied when a predicted impedance matches one of the previously measured impedances.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a formulated conductive grease for an associated bearing that can be used in a drive system, such as a variable frequency drive system for motors having a formulation sufficient to reduce the voltage build up that causes damaging electric discharge machining (“EDM”) on rotational bearing supported surfaces, such as inner and outer races, while still maintaining a grease composition suitable for bearing long life at operational temperatures. The higher conductivity of the inventive grease results in lowering of the threshold voltage of pulse discharges, which consequently decreases the energy release in each pulse and the resulting bearing temperatures, avoiding bearing damage. The disclosure further provides a bearing lifetime prediction model given typical discharge conditions from both Si and SiC inverters using a bearing state of health (SOH) metric.

Abstract

Systems and methods for displaying super saturated color. Image data for display on a display or viewing device with a potential white luminance in a standard system with a maximum luminance is processed such that colors near the white point are reduced to a limited luminance. As the chroma of the displayed color is increased, a luminance attenuation is decreased. The scaling of the reduction is operable to be a linear function, a non-linear function, or any other function.

Abstract

The described process synthesizes a halide-free single-site borane compound product tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane, or BoCb3. BoCb3 has Lewis superacid properties. The compounds, BoCb3, are thermally stable, and not reactive towards oxygen, but are sensitive to water. The characteristic high fluoride ion affinity is further translated to the catalytic C—F bond activation reactions of the unactivated alkyl fluorides towards the reduction and C—C bond forming reactions with silanes, and Fridel-Crafts type reactions with arenes. The device is connected to a display screen that receives simple inputs from an operator, including height, weight, or sex of the distressed patient, but does not require input of more complicated variables, such as tidal volume, respiratory rate, inspiratory airflow, or positive end-expiratory pressure. Based on the input height, weight, and/or sex, the device automatically correlates the input values with probably values for tidal volume, respiratory rate, inspiratory airflow, or positive end-expiratory pressure, based previous data point correlations. The device then begins delivering air from a ventilator to the patient based on the estimated, correlated values. While the device utilizes simple inputs, it still capable of operating in multiple modes with both pressure control and volume control.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides an autonomous biomonitoring system in lotic ecosystems, such as streams. A central design concept of autonomy is capturing aquatic organisms from their natural habitat and entraining them through an analyzer with an imaging unit. The system provides a collector for a sampling aqueous mixture that can flow through a screen to a sediment trap that is coupled to a pump that discharges the aqueous mixture into a staging tank. The staging tank is coupled to a flow-through analyzer and can continuously buffer and control the volume of aqueous mixture flow through the analyzer, and then the aqueous mixture is discharged. In at least one embodiment, the system allows continuous monitoring over a period of time. The system can transmit real time data to a remote location for data accumulation. The system can further provide remote movement of the collector for sampling at multiple remote locations.

Abstract

Systems and methods for a multi-primary color system for display. A multi-primary color system increases the number of primary colors available in a color system and color system equipment. Increasing the number of primary colors reduces metameric errors from viewer to viewer. A six-primary color system includes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta primaries. The systems of the present invention maintain compatibility with existing color systems and equipment and provide systems for backwards compatibility with older color systems.

Abstract

The present invention provides a mechanical apparatus that simulates animal movement with a high degree of accuracy. In at least some embodiments, the mechanical apparatus uses interlinked multiple four-bar linkages to provide nonlinear compound movement. Multiple four-bar linkages may be progressively linked to other four-bar linkages to produce such compound movement. The current invention improves the realism of the animal mannequin motion by using. A bovine mannequin, for example, may have multi-joint legs connected through linkages, linkages that drive hopping movement patterns to match real motion patterning of a trajectory of the hooves, timing between tail and hoof motion, spring-damper pivoting of the hoof segments for longer and more realistic ground contact, vertical spring-damper pivot axis for the entire animal mannequin to swing laterally, and a horizontal spring-damper swing axis for the entire animal mannequin to rotate axially, and/or double linkages bi-laterally for better stability, among other features.

Abstract

A method and system is provided for increasing lipids, biomass, and metabolite yields of a microalgae culture of cells and other organisms with conserved metabolic pathways compared to an untreated culture or organism when maintained under normal conditions. The method includes irradiating with electromagnetic ionizing radiation to induce rapid and reproducible hormetic metabolic activation in the organism cells. In an embodiment, the irradiation can be applied in a exponential or stationary phase of microalgae growth. The hormetic effect involves up-regulation of expression of lipid metabolism genes encoding enzymes that are involved in the biosynthesis of lipids with accumulation of energy reserves in the form of lipids and/or accumulation of other metabolites. The method can be implemented in a system that can interface with existing microalgae cultivation platforms, standard microalgae cultivation conditions, alongside standard microalgae culture types, and similarly with organisms with conserved metabolic pathways in their growth substrates.

Abstract

The disclosure provides a microwave system developed to measure properties of fluidic materials incident upon a surface using a phase response of multiple microstrip transmission lines, generally over an ultra-wideband excitation. The system can include a series of parallel planar transmission lines as waveguides that are coupled to an insulator layer and a conductor as a formed-to-fit or flexible insulator layer, an ultra-wideband RF transceiver measuring phase angle, and a processing computer. The system can directly measure electrical permittivity in the microwave frequency band. This measurement can be processed to determine the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous fluidic material on a surface to which the transmission lines are coupled, the presence of a phase change in the fluidic material, and potentially the presence of other fluidic materials, depending on differences in permittivity between the fluid materials. In some embodiments, a thickness of the material can be also be provided.

Abstract

Insecticidal toxins described herein are fused toxin peptides made up of a targeting domain fused to a toxin domain. The targeting peptide generates a specific association with mosquitoes by causing the fused toxin peptide to bind mosquitoes in a way that leads to the insecticidal activity. Transgenic plants described herein are mosquitocidal by expressing an insecticidal toxin protein in nectar that includes a targeting peptide to ensure specificity against mosquitoes. These transgenic plants serve as role models for safety, since they are non-crop plants and specific to one mosquito species.

As the chroma of the displayed color is increased, a luminance attenuation is decreased. The scaling of the reduction is operable to be a linear function, a non-linear function, or any other function.

Abstract

Systems and methods for a multi-primary color system for display. A multi-primary color system increases the number of primary colors available in a color system and color system equipment. Increasing the number of primary colors reduces metameric errors from viewer to viewer. One embodiment of the multi-primary color system includes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta primaries. The systems of the present invention maintain compatibility with existing color systems and equipment and provide systems for backwards compatibility with older color systems.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a rotating propeller design that maintains a high efficiency and reduces noise. The design provides an unloaded tip zone of positive lift starting prior to an end of the tip with negligible, if any, positive lift that is counterintuitive to the purpose of a propeller. The unloaded tip zone decreases the strength of a tip vortex and reduces induced drag. The result is a significant reduction in noise while maintaining substantially high mechanical efficiency, even with an optional increase in RPM to compensate for the reduced lift without requiring a longer propeller. At least one propeller design can break the beta angle from the propeller hub with a different beta angle at a first location from the hub and then also break the beta angle at a second location further from the hub into the unloaded tip zone to form a double break propeller.

Systems and methods for a six-primary color system for display. A six-primary color system increases the number of primary colors available in a color system and color system equipment. Increasing the number of primary colors reduces metameric errors from viewer to viewer. The six-primary color system includes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta primaries. The systems of the present invention maintain compatibility with existing color systems and equipment and provide systems for backwards compatibility with older color systems.
