In an example aspect, a system for subcooling liquid carbon dioxide to be used for dry ice production comprises a refrigeration unit that includes cooling fluid within a cooling fluid circuit and a condenser to cool the cooling fluid. The system further comprises a heat exchanger connectable along a first fluid path between a liquid carbon dioxide source and dry ice production equipment via a liquid carbon dioxide supply line, the heat exchanger having a second fluid path connectable to the refrigeration unit via the cooling fluid circuit; wherein the heat exchanger maintains the first fluid path and the second fluid path adjacent to one another to facilitate heat exchange therebetween, and an outlet that outputs the liquid carbon dioxide to the dry ice production equipment and is in fluid communication with the heat exchanger through the liquid carbon dioxide supply line.

In an aspect, a system for producing dry ice comprises a hydraulic power unit, a block press comprising, an injection point for receiving liquid carbon dioxide from a supply tank that includes a control valve, a chamber in fluid communication with the injection point and that receives the liquid carbon dioxide, the chamber at a lower pressure than the supply tank that allows the liquid carbon dioxide to undergo a flashing process that results in carbon dioxide snow and carbon dioxide gas, a hydraulic press powered by the hydraulic power unit that powers the hydraulic press to operate at variable speeds, the hydraulic press increasing pressure upon the carbon dioxide snow causing the carbon dioxide snow to form a solid carbon dioxide block, and an outlet for removing the solid carbon dioxide block.
A carbon dioxide distribution system and carbon dioxide subcooler useable within such a system are disclosed. The carbon dioxide subcooler includes an insulated enclosure forming an interior volume, the insulated enclosure having a supply inlet, a supply outlet, and a cooling inlet in fluidic communication with the interior volume.
