Abstract

A rotary lawn mower has one or more grass cutting blades that are rotatable in opposite directions about a vertical axis or axes. Each blade is double edged having front and rear cutting edges on each end of the blade. Each blade end has a front sloped face inboard of the front cutting edge and a rear sloped face inboard of the rear cutting edge. These faces create air flow within the cutting chamber when cutting grass regardless of the direction of rotation of the blade. The direction of rotation of each blade is reversed to switch between discharge and mulching modes of operation. A flow director has a curved vertical guide wall that guides the grass clippings through a discharge opening in the discharge mode and that guides the flow of grass clippings away from the discharge opening in the mulching mode.

Abstract

An autonomous work vehicle generates a localization image of a part of a scene surrounding the autonomous work vehicle and generates a check image of a different part of the scene. A controller of the vehicle performs a localization process that involves generating the localization image and the check image. The localization image is used to determine an estimated pose of the autonomous work vehicle within the work region via a stored 3D point cloud (3DPC). The estimated pose and the 3DPC are used to determine predicted features within the check image. A comparison between the predicted features and corresponding features in the check image validates the estimated pose based on the comparison satisfying a threshold.

Abstract

A thermal storage device for batteries is provided. In some examples, the thermal storage device is provided for a battery pack that includes one or more rechargeable battery cells. In some examples, the lithium ion battery cells are used. The thermal storage device is in thermal contact with the battery cell. The thermal storage device is made of a material that absorbs heat that is given off by battery cells during discharge. In some examples, the thermal storage device is made of a plastic material. The material has a relatively low thermal conductivity but a relatively high specific heat capacity, allowing heat energy to be stored in the thermal storage device. The thermal storage device prevents the battery pack from overheating during use. The thermal storage device defines one or more cell receiving volumes. In some examples, an axially extending relief volume is provided.

Abstract

A boundary of a work region is defined in which an autonomous machine is to operate. A dead zone is defined in the work region wherein a loss of a wireless geolocation service is known or predicted. A traversal pattern within the boundary is autogenerated. The autonomous machine executes the traversal pattern to perform work using the wireless geolocation service to navigate outside of the dead zone. When encountering the dead zone before, during, or after executing the traversal pattern, the machine prioritize a localization input that does not rely on the wireless geolocation service to perform the work in the dead zone.

Abstract

A gang reel mower has a hybrid engine, generator and battery pack electric power system driving a pair of electric wheel motors for propelling the mower and for driving individual reel motors for powering a plurality of reel cutting units. A master controller is programmable with a selected clip and maintains the selected clip whether the mower travels straight ahead or is turning. The output power of the generator is damped and is gradually increased during high electrical loads to prevent step responses in the engine and thereby limit engine droop. During regenerative braking of the mower, the generator can be driven as a motor to use the engine as a load. This limits the voltage produced by the traction motors during regenerative braking from damaging the electrical system or overcharging the battery pack. Moreover, maximum transport and mowing ground speeds are automatically reduced during some turns of the mower.
