An apparatus for ultrafiltration of a patient being overhydrated due to congestive heart failure, comprising a tube set including a connector (21) for connection to a patient line (3) for access to the peritoneal cavity of the patient. A flow pump (41-43) is arranged for addition and removal outflow and inflow (recirculation) of fluid from/to the peritoneal cavity. An osmotic agent peristaltic pump (16) is arranged for replenishment of glucose solution to the fluid added to the peritoneal cavity for promoting ultrafiltration. The glucose is replenished intermittently for keeping a concentration of glucose substantially constant in the peritoneal cavity. The flow pump comprises a pressure chamber (43) with rigid walls and a flexible pump bag (41) arranged therein. An air pump (45) pressurizes the chamber for outflow of fluid from the peritoneal cavity by a sub pressure and inflow of fluid to the peritoneal cavity by an overpressure, which pressures are maintained within safe limits.

DIALYSIS DEVICE COMPRISING AN EVAPORATOR/CONDENSER DEVICE
A dialysis device comprising a dialysis circuit for providing dialysis fluid and returning purified fluid to the dialysis circuit. The device comprises an evaporator/condenser device (30), provided with an evaporator bag (31) and a condenser bag (36). The evaporator bag receives dialysis fluid from the dialysis bag (14) and produces steam, whereby a concentrated dialysis fluid is left and drained to a drain bag. The condenser bag (36) receives the steam produced in the evaporation bag and condenses the steam for producing pure water for being returned to said dialysis circuit. The evaporation and condensation takes place at a subatmospheric pressure, such as between 30 and 70 mmHg at a temperature of about 30 to 44°C. Heat energy is provided to the evaporation bag and the condenser bag is cooled. The cooled energy may be absorbed by a heat pump for delivery of heat to the evaporator bag.

APPARATUS FOR PERFORMING PERITONEAL ULTRAFILTRATION
An apparatus for ultrafiltration of a patient being overhydrated due to congestive heart failure, comprising a tube set including a connector (21) for connection to a patient line (3) for access to the peritoneal cavity of the patient. A flow pump (41-43) is arranged for addition and removal outflow and inflow (recirculation) of fluid from/to the peritoneal cavity. An osmotic agent peristaltic pump (16) is arranged for replenishment of glucose solution to the fluid added to the peritoneal cavity for promoting ultrafiltration. The glucose is replenished intermittently for keeping a concentration of glucose substantially constant in the peritoneal cavity. The flow pump comprises a pressure chamber (43) with rigid walls and a flexible pump bag (41) arranged therein. An air pump (45) pressurizes the chamber for outflow of fluid from the peritoneal cavity by a sub pressure and inflow of fluid to the peritoneal cavity by an overpressure, which pressures are maintained within safe limits.

A patient tube (22) is connected to a patient connector (21), intended to be connected to a patient line (3) for access to a peritoneal cavity (2) of the patient (1). The patient tube comprises a flow pump (15) for addition and removal of a peritoneal fluid between the cassette (25) and the peritoneal cavity (2). The fluid is introduced into an intermittent bag (33) controlled by an intermittent valve (18) and then returned the same way back to the peritoneal cavity. Glucose is metered into the fluid entering the peritoneal cavity by means of a glucose pump (15). Glucose is replenished continuously or intermittently for keeping a concentration of the osmotic agent substantially constant in the peritoneal cavity. After treatment, the peritoneal fluid is drained to a drain bag (30), wherein the drain tube (31) comprises a drain valve (17) and an albumin filter.

A regeneration circuit for regeneration of a dialysis fluid. An inlet (11) and an outlet (12) are arranged to pass a dialysis fluid to and from the regeneration circuit by means of a pump (13). An adsorbent cartridge (14) is arranged downstream of the pump and comprises an adsorbent (16) made of e.g. activated carbon and an adsorbent (17) made of metal-complexed chitosan and possibly further adsorbents. Downstream of the last adsorbent is arranged a further general adsorbent (18) arranged to adsorb metal ions, such as copper ions, possibly given off by previous adsorbents. Such a general adsorbent (18) is an adsorbent made of uncomplexed chitosan, which adsorb metal ions and does not adsorb physiological electrolytes commonly included in a dialysis fluid, such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium ions.
Claims 1 -5 relate to methods for treatment of the human or animal body by therapy, since the claims describe changing the compositions of the circulation dialysis fluid, which will affect the ion concentration in the patient's blood. See PCT rule 43bis.1 (b) and PCT rule 67.1.(iv). Nevertheless, an examination has been conducted for these claims. The examination has been made in respect of the technical content of the claims.
A method of adsorption of potassium ions from a peritoneal dialysis fluid, which has been removed from the peritoneal cavity of a patient performing peritoneal dialysis for subsequent recirculation and introduction into the peritoneal cavity of the patient. The peritoneal dialysis fluid is passed through a potassium adsorbent, such as a zeolite, which has been pre-equilibrated with an equilibration fluid comprising Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, CI', lactate, in substantially the same concentration as in the peritoneal dialysis fluid and which equilibration fluid lacks K+. The zeolite may be titrated with an acid. Alternatively, a zeolite having a Si:Al ratio which is larger than 5:1 is used. Alternatively, a cation exhange material, such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate, is used.
A method of producing a copper-chitosan polymer material for adsorption of urea from a dialysis solution. A solid chitosan polymer material is immersed in a copper salt solution of a weak acid, such as copper acetate, for allowing the copper ions to complex with the chitosan polymer. The macroporous chitosan polymer membrane has a thickness of no more than about 200 μπι and has a pore size of between about 1 to 100 μπι, for example 20 to 50 μπι. Alternatively, solid chitosan fibers, solid chitosan particles or a chitosan gel bead can be complexed with copper acetate. The concentration of the copper acetate solution is above 50 mM whereby gel formation of the solid chitosan material is avoided during the complexation step.

A method and a system for regenerating a body fluid, such as a peritoneal dialysis fluid. The body fluid is removed into an extracorporeal circuit comprising an electrofilter for removing charged ions from the body fluid, a nanofilter for removing large molecules, such as Dextran 40, and a reverse osmosis filter for concentrating the body fluid, for producing a synthetic urine to be discarded. The removed ions and large molecules are returned to the patient together with pure water from the reverse osmosis filter through an ultrafilter.
