Abstract

A penetration indicator composition has been discovered which is soluble in solvent-based wood treating solutions, normally invisible to the human eye, and capable of exhibiting a visible color under test conditions. The indicator composition includes a hydrophobic borolane or a hydrophobic borate ester which exhibits a visually detectable color under the influence of a color change reagent. The new indicator composition is chemically stabile under wood treating conditions and detectable at relatively low ranges of concentration. Oil-soluble preservatives such as pentachlorophenol, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, propiconazole, and tebuconazole are compatible with the new indicator composition. Methods for indicating penetration of a non-aqueous solvent composition in wood or a wood-composite are also disclosed.

The invention provides anti-skinning compositions for use in manufacturing oil-based coating materials. Non-yellowing degassing compositions which enhance degassing in powder coatings and other film-forming curable coatings are disclosed. The non-yellowing compositions contain degassing agents including a plurality of unfused aromatic rings and at least one functional group selected from ketals, carbamates, carbonates and carboxylic acid esters. Abstract

Highly concentrated, water-based dispersions of certain lipophilic and/or hydrophobic antimicrobially active materials are stabilized to a surprising degree by a surfactant combination including a nonionic acrylic graft copolymer surfactant and a alkoxylated polyarylphenol phosphate ester surfactant. The active materials may be present in dispersion concentrates of the present invention singly or in useful combinations. The active materials are selected from the group of fungicides and bactericides consisting of 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; 2-octyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one; 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one; 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one; pyrithione zinc; 3-iodo-2-propynyl butylcarbamate; 2-methylthio-4-ethylamino-6-tert-butylamino-s-triazine; and 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, and mixtures thereof. The dispersion concentrates may be efficiently shipped and stored, and subsequently diluted with water to produce less concentrated dispersions when desired. Even at relatively high concentrations, the dispersion compositions of the present invention can be stored for months or years without significant loss of stability.

Abstract

The invention provides co-solvents for preparing clear solutions of a biocidal agent known as 10, 10′-oxybisphenoxarsine (OBPA). The clear solutions are stable over a relatively broad range of temperatures and have very low Volatile Organic Carbon (VOC) content. They can be included in master batches for the manufacture of plastic materials, such as flexible PVC.
