Abstract

In order to use a free-standing umbrella, in particular a garden umbrella, patio umbrella or the like, which has a canopy (1) supported by a central or eccentric upright tube (3), in countries having hot climates, a cooling apparatus which is integrated into the upright tube is provided, comprising a liquid connection (14) disposed in the bottom region of the upright tube (3), a liquid feed line (15) extending along the upright tube (3), and at least one spray nozzle (16) which is disposed underneath the canopy (1), is connected to the feed line (15), and allows liquid that is fed at a defined pressure by way of the feed line (15) to be sprayed in small droplets such that the droplets evaporate at a certain temperature in the region underneath the canopy (1).
