Abstract

The contamination of receiving water bodies by heavy metals due to anthropomorphic activities is of great significance to human health. There are metals that have a high capacity to form radicals that alter cellular functions when they exceed certain concentrations, for example, a prolonged exposure to concentrations greater than 20 mg of copper/L promotes the development of cancer. The invention relates to a thermoplastic matrix of chitosan (Ch) and polycaprolactone (PCL) for the removal of heavy metals in waste water, which, used in a ratio of 2:1 p/p respectively, offers a capacity of 62.5 mg Cu2+/g adsorbent (ads) in continuous processes with a HRT of less than 2 hours, and which permits various reuse cycles.

Abstract

The present invention pertains to the mining industry and to the processing of minerals and materials containing gold and silver. More specifically, it relates to a method for recovering gold and silver from copper thiosulphate solutions by a self-sustaining electrolytic process. The advantages of the present invention over the prior art are that it is faster than cementation with copper, without using electric current. The claimed method is characterised in that it is performed in a self-sustaining electrochemical cell in which the anode and cathode are short-circuited; and the anode and cathode compartments are separated by an ion exchange membrane. Moreover, the provision of a copper anode and the use of a stripping solution as the anolyte allow soluble copper levels to be kept stable, thus preserving the leaching power of thiosulphate solutions, and allowing them to be recycled in a new leaching step.

Abstract

The present invention relates to the development of a method for obtainment from amaranth grain of albumin 1 and globulin hydrolysate fractions containing peptides having antihypertensive activity as evaluated by the IC50 value thereof. Different fractions may be obtained from the hydrolysate depending on the degree of purity required. The process may be stopped at any stage of the procedure ensuring that it contains antihypertensive proteins. Nevertheless it is preferable to obtain 0.55 kDa peptide fractions for albumin 1 and 0.4 kDa for globulin. The process is simple and solely involves extraction of the proteins from amaranth grain utilising 0.04 M sodium sulphate solution, and subsequent separation of albumin 1 and globulin through the difference in solubility thereof in water. Hydrolysis of these proteins is realised by alcalase for 15 or 18 h for albumin 1 and globulin, respectively. The hydrolysate obtained may be used from this moment onwards or, if preferred, the hydrolysate fractions containing antihypertensive peptides may be purified to the desired degree of purity, ensuring that the fraction conserves antihypertensive activity evaluated in terms of the IC50 value thereof.

Abstract

Methods and systems for analysing the operation of a cochlear stimulation system. An audio stimulus is generated to make the cochlear stimulation system operate. During the operation the intracochlear electrodes generate signals within the auditory nervous system. The response of the patient's nervous system may be measured as an electrical cochlear response ('ECR'). The ECR may be detected and analysed for adaptation, calibration, operational evaluation and fault detection of the patient's cochlear implant. Furthermore the example methods may be utilised to estimate the audiometric thresholds of the implanted patient without his knowledge.

Abstract

The invention relates to the mining industry and is intended for the recovery of silver and gold values from solutions resulting from the leaching of mined materials. The reactor includes: a cathodic compartment with a first three-dimensional stainless steel electrode, in which compartment a reaction is performed comprising the electro-reduction of the Ag(I) and Au(I) values dissolved in a leaching liquor; and an anodic compartment in which an oxidation reaction is performed, with the energy used in both compartments being jointly harnessed and said compartments being separated by an anionic membrane. The nature and configuration of the cathode can be used to generate powder deposits that leave the reactor under the effect of the velocity of the fluid, thereby enabling the process to be operated continuously without the reactor being opened. The reactor also includes stainless steel plates for supporting the electrodes, which enable the electric current to be distributed uniformly over the meshes, and a pair of flow distribution channels for discharging the electro-generated metal powders.

The remaining solution can be recirculated to the leaching step and the resulting yields are similar to those achieved with fresh solutions, meaning that the composition of the solution does not become significantly inferior as a result of the electroseparation process. Said improved process provides enhanced metal recovery efficiency and yields relative to known processes.

Abstract

The purpose of the present invention is to demonstrate that semiconducting and non-biodegradable implants made with polypyrol and polyethylenglycol copolymers and iodine-doped and plasma-synthesised pyrol polymers, have a neuroprotector effect and induce the reconnection of the spinal cord after an injury. This effect was proved in a model involving a complete section of the spinal cord in rats. The results of the functional evaluation demonstrated 5 times greater recovery in animals implanted with the polypyrol-polyethylenglycol copolymer compared with the control group which only underwent a complete section of the spinal cord; in addition, the functional recovery of the group with iodine-doped polypyrol was ten times greater compared to the control group. In the histological study various inflammatory and immune cells were identified at the injury site in the three experimental groups with and without implants and the integration of the polymers in the nervous tissue of the spinal cord was also observed. Finally, no respiratory, renal or skin infections, adverse effects or rejection of the biomaterials were found in any of the animals.

Abstract

The invention relates to the mining industry and to an electrocatalyst for producing an oxidising agent by means of the partial oxidation of sulphurous compounds, such as formamidine disulphide (FDS) from thiourea (Tu). The inventive material and process are advantageous over the prior art in that they enable efficient partial oxidation of sulphurous compounds without producing any parasitic reactions such as subsequent oxidations or oxygen evolution. The structure of the invention consists of a bimetallic electrocatalyst having a molar ratio of between (0.8 - 1) Pt : (0.012- 0.016) Pb on the surface of the support and the method for preparing same comprises the use of the sol-gel technique using a polymer precursor.
