Abstract

A control process for microgrids for voltage regulation on the main bus and power factor (PF) regulation at generator terminals is presented, especially in events scheduled in the microgrid that result in electrical transients, such as direct starting of induction motors (IM). The technology takes advantage of idle capacity of distributed converters (for example: frequency inverters, “variable frequency drive” or VFD) of microgrids making them, in coordinated manner, injecting and/or absorbing reactive power, in addition to exploit the reduced latency of autonomous VFD control during the transient. The Power-Based Control (PBC) technique is used and a modified Volt-VAr function is created applied during the transitional regime.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for obtaining an anti-corrosive adhesive repair patch made from discarded PET bottles using the phase inversion technique by complete precipitation of recycled PET. The resulting film can be used as an adhesive patch and can be applied to any metal surface whether painted or not, without preparing the surface, which removes steps from the painting process and makes the method disclosed in the present invention less costly. Said adhesive repair patch is easy to apply by simply removing the liner and applying the patch to the structure, without the need for specialized labour, has a durability of a minimum of 2 years, and can be removed or not for maintenance painting. If removed, the adhesive PET patch comes off easily using a conventional hydroblasting method.

Abstract

Disclosed is a catalyst based on synthetic silica, in a heterogeneous catalysis method, to promote the effective conversion of residual glycerin, resulting from the production of biodiesel, into formic acid with high selectivity and stability, in a continuous flow reaction. The conversion of residual glycerin occurs by homogeneous catalysis, by the action of components remaining from the synthesis of biodiesel, with the formation of major compounds, such as formic acid, cyclic ethers and diglycerol, in continuous flow and reflow reactions. The reaction can also be carried out by adding sodium salts in the homogeneous catalytic conversion process of commercial glycerin. The process values the residual glycerin, without the need for purification before its transformation into products with high added value, but of renewable origin, adding more interest and potential.

Abstract

The invention addresses to a system and method that allow controlling the individual power flow of each battery, being indicated for energy accumulator systems of the electrochemical-battery type, solidly connected to the electrical grid, respecting each of its characteristics during operation. Thus, if the batteries present different states of charge, the system will be responsible for draining from each battery only the amount of energy that can be used. For different states of health, charge and life, the performance and discharge capacity are preserved. For degraded batteries, the system allows their replacement without the need of replacing the entire bank, including batteries with different technologies.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a synthetic-silica catalyst used in a heterogeneous catalysis method for the effective conversion of residual glycerin resulting from the production of biodiesel into formic acid with high selectivity and stability, in a continuous-flow reaction. It should be noted that products with high added value are formed with the mere presence of an oxidizing agent, including without a catalyst. In this case, the conversion of the residual glycerin occurs by homogeneous catalysis, by the action of the components left over from the synthesis of the biodiesel, with the formation of major components, such as formic acid, cyclic ethers and diglycerol, in continuous-flow and reflux reactions. The reaction can also be brought about by adding sodium salts to the process of homogeneous catalytic conversion of the commercial glycerin. The process developed in the present invention reuses the residual glycerin without the need for purification before its transformation into products of high added value and renewable origin, enhancing the usefulness and potential of the invention.

Abstract

Efficient method for mixing, dispersing and integrating reduced graphene oxide (RGO) or carbon nanomaterials or nanostructured materials into a fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) matrix. The polymer material comprises a mixture of the solid epoxy in particulate form with a curing agent, catalyst, pigments and inorganic additives. This enables particulate nanometric additives to be added to the FBE, using the FBE in solid state. The mixtures have little or no sign of RGO aggregation following application of the composite as metal coating. The FBE + RGO mixture can be applied to metal surfaces to protect against abrasive and corrosive processes. Resistance to abrasion is improved by up to 11%, material resistance to accelerated tests (such as immersion in a bath of hot water) is improved, and adherence is increased significantly, by approximately 100%, following the hot bath immersion test.

Abstract

The present invention relates to the large-scale production of polymer nanocomposite with a matrix of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) additivated with carbon nanomaterial (or nanofiller), and its use in ore transfer points. Suitable routes for processing polymer materials with ultra-high viscosity and additivated with 2D carbon nanomaterials in small fractions have been developed as part of the present invention to substantially improve mechanical, tribological and surface performance. Mixing in the molten state is the most industrially efficient and viable method for obtaining polymer nanocomposite materials. However, it is very difficult to achieve ideal dispersion and homogenization of this type of 2D nanomaterial with these matrices. In addition, polymers with high molar mass entail many inherent processing difficulties. The invention stresses that the pre-exfoliation of the nanofillers is essential to achieving significant dispersion of the nanofillers, enhancing the effects on the properties. The results presented demonstrate that the process developed produces nanostructured materials with suitable morphologies, and consequently excellent mechanical and surface properties.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for producing an artificial aggregate from ore mining dam waste. The iron ore sandy tailings are mixed with a binder and, by means of a process of mixing and pelleting, form the artificial aggregate. The artificial aggregate thereby produced has a spheroidal shape, is coarse, has a rough surface and a colour ranging from pink to dark red. Said artificial aggregate can be used as a replacement for a natural aggregate, and can be used for manufacturing stronger concrete, for the base and subbase of roads, as a decorative element for gardens and flower beds, and is also a means for storing ore mining dam waste in the form of pellets, adding value to said waste and reducing the impact of mining on the environment.

Abstract

The present patent application describes a device for determining gestational age, methods for determining gestational age at birth by measuring parameters associated with the photobiological properties of the skin and clinical parameters of newborns. The technology makes it possible to determine gestational age at birth using photobiological properties of the skin such as the reflectance or reflectivity by measuring the diffused or scattered portions of the light beam incident on the skin, as well as the erythema index, along with clinical parameters of the newborn such as sex, the use of phototherapy, birth weight and time spent in incubator. The technology provides many advantages, since the ability to obtain a realistic estimate of the age of the conceptus quickly, non-invasively and at low cost makes it possible to provide care suited to the needs of the newborn, to assess the chances of survival and to affect the short- and long-term prognosis of the newborn. In population terms, it facilitates recognition of prematurity, which is relevant to public health policy worldwide. The correct determination of gestational age at birth also influences clinical follow-up protocols in infancy and vital statistics.

Abstract

The present invention describes a method for generating co-ordinate information on motion artifacts. The technology uses structured light techniques based on multiple projection patterns applied to three-dimensional image reconstruction steps in conjunction with data processing (shadow removal, background removal, random noise filtering and data sampling). The technology further provides a time sequence of three-dimensional data relating to the motion of an object of interest to which image capture is applied. It can be used in imaging diagnostic equipment, such as magnetic resonance equipment, besides tomographic machines for computer-assisted x-ray tomography or computer-assisted positron emission tomography, for example. The proposed method can track the patient's movements with six degrees of freedom (three rotational and three translational movements that are linearly independent) during data acquisition and provide position-tracking data over time on the basis of this information, in order to correct motion artifacts prospectively. The advantages are: elimination of fiducial markers, shortening the time and reducing the cost of imaging diagnostic procedures, besides ensuring the comfort and preserving the health of the patient, especially during procedures involving exposure to radiation.

Abstract

The present subject matter describes a method for obtaining graphite oxide and graphene oxide using microwaves. The production of graphite oxide comprises the use of at least one intercalating agent and an oxidising agent which cause graphite to expand and oxidise in well regulated conditions with respect to power, temperature and time of exposure to microwaves. This technology makes it possible to obtain graphite oxide in a very short time, thus providing a more efficient, scalable and less energy-consuming method. Graphite oxide can be easily exfoliated to form graphene oxide by the use of ultrasound. The thus obtained graphene oxide exhibits a high degree of oxidation, a high thermal stability and a high conservation of the lateral area of the graphitic flakes. This technology also relates to the products obtained and to the use thereof. Graphene oxide can be used as an additive in polymer composites or for producing reduced graphene oxide for use in supercapacitors and batteries, among other uses.

Abstract

The present invention relates to gold nanorods (AuNR) functionalised with the E protein of the envelope of Dengue virus (DENV) (SEQ ID No. 1), to the use thereof as a dengue disease immunodiagnosing tool, and to dengue disease immunodiagnosis kits using these particles as antigen marker. According to this technology, AuNRs are obtained by a method mediated by a modified seed. Functionalisation requires a step of associating lipoic acid to the surface of the nanoparticles, followed by a diimide-activated amidation reaction to form the covalent bond between the carboxylic acids at the end of the lipoic acids and the amine radicals of the E proteins of the envelope of Dengue virus. The particles obtained by this method have been shown to recognise serum containing anti-DENV monoclonal antibodies with high specificity and a high level of sensitivity, which makes them useful as tools for the immunodiagnosis of dengue disease.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a device and method for determining photoactivation times from an existing measurement of the quantity of light transmitted through translucent materials, preferably dental materials, using intelligent systems, preferably artificial neural networks (ANN). In this case, the present invention enables the user (such as a clinic) to measure, with indirect fillings (made in dental prosthesis laboratories), the quantity of light energy immediately before cementing, quantitively, simply and quickly, on site, in real time and specifically for each filling. The use of the device and the method according to the present invention thus makes it possible to calculate the photopolymerization time required for the indirect filling to be cemented, increasing the productivity of the fillings. Alternatively, a cement may be used that requires light for the related chemical reaction to occur efficiently, preventing posterior marginal leaks and adhesion faults in the cement that would need to be properly photopolymerized, thereby increasing the durability of the filled element.

Abstract

The present patent application comprises a method and an apparatus for eliminating harmonic components on the basis of two complementary techniques, namely the selective elimination of harmonics by pulse width modulation (SHE PWM), together with a multiple winding transformer. The combination of these two resources can reduce current harmonic distortion to extremely low values, providing a really uniform power factor. This technology is suitable for low and medium voltage alternating current-direct current and direct current-alternating current converters which provide an interface with the power grid and must exhibit low current harmonic distortion because of the high value of the power involved and also because of the fragility of the power grid (low short-circuit power at the coupling point).

Abstract

The present invention patent application comprises the method for producing a structural epoxy polymer resin strengthened with carbon-based nanostructures (graphene that is isolated or combined with carbon nanotubes), which can be used with extreme efficiency for structural adhesion of various substrates such as, for example, metal components or of polymer composite materials for use such as in the aeronautic, marine, structural industries, and in structural components for oil platforms, inter alia, providing a huge increase in load capacity of adhered joints. Furthermore, when exposed to ultraviolet light, the adhesive developed using said composition of resin and carbon-based nanostructures (graphene that is isolated or combined with carbon nanotubes) undergoes a post-curing process, which increases the tensile strength thereof even further and, consequently, the load capacity of structural joints adhered therewith. In addition, the low viscosity thereof enables easy application thereof to large areas, representing a simple, safe, strong and extremely efficient option for adhering structural parts and consolidating laminated composites.

Abstract

The present utility model application relates to an improvement to cookers intended to make the use of such appliances safer by preventing accidents such as burns and scalds. The alterations proposed comprise a new arrangement of the gas supply valves to the burners, in the case of gas cookers, or changing the layout of the heat control switches that activate the hobs of an electric cooker, the hobs being analogous to the burners of a gas cooker. The purpose of the aforementioned alterations is the sequential actuation of the hobs, making actuation of the hobs at the front of the cooker dependent on the prior actuation of the hobs in the central or rear parts of the cooker. In the improvement proposed, the more powerful burners or hobs are positioned to the rear of the cooker so that the use of same is not dependent on the prior operation of the other hob, since these more powerful hobs are used very frequently.

Abstract

The present invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing fullerenes, preferably fullerol, which are spherical carbon nanostructures, as novel tools for the treatment of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. The antileishmanial compositions containing fullerol can further comprise another leishmanicidal drug or immunomodulator, in free form or in combination with a nanocarrier, such as liposomes, which improves the pharmacokinetic proprieties of the active principles. Surprisingly, fullerol had antileishmanial activity and was able to reduce hepatotoxicity of meglumine antimoniate when administered in combination therewith in an animal model of visceral leishmaniasis. Fullerol therefore proved to be the first drug capable both of exerting antileishmanial activity without side effects and reducing the toxicity of another leishmanicidal drug without interfering in the pharmacological activity thereof. Finally, the invention comprises the use of pharmaceutical compositions containing fullerenes for the treatment of leishmaniasis.

Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of adsorbents prepared from sewage sludge by a thermal treatment for removing chemical lipophilic components from wood extracts and pitch deposits in the paper and cellulose industry. Adsorption efficiency was evaluated and compared with magnesium silicate, i.e. talc, which is the reference adsorbent. Five adsorbents exhibited an adsorption capacity of more than 71.7% by mass. All the thus prepared adsorbents were more efficient than talc for absorbing chemical lipophilic components of pitch, in terms of both mass and number of retained compounds.

Abstract

The present invention is comprised of the combination of superhydrophobic polystyrene (PS) nanomembranes and expanded exfoliated graphite that has been ground or is in the form of a spiral. The superhydrophobic polystyrene nanomembranes have various functions due to being hydrophobic, provide a medium for the adsorption of hydrocarbons, particularly petroleum, and provide a medium for retaining expanded spiral graphite. For retaining the expanded spiral graphite, the superhydrophobic polystyrene nanomembranes can also be previously deposited on cotton fibres, in the form of a mesh or serge-type fabric. Said cotton fibres are nanomodified and, along with the superhydrophobic nanomembranes, can act as a medium for retaining expanded graphite. Depending on their final use, the membranes produced can have various shapes, such as composites with a sachet configuration. In this case, the expanded graphite can be surrounded by the nanomodified cotton fibres, forming an arrangement of graphite intercalated between two parts of the polystyrene nanomembrane-coated fabric (Figure 1), thus producing a system for retaining, adsorbing and absorbing petroleum, which can be optionally supported by floats.

Abstract

The present technology describes a perfusion chamber for tissue culture, the chamber being made of a material that can include different types of polymer that have good thermal and electrical properties and moderate strength, and that are easy to machine and capable of being autoclaved, which is an essential factor when the intention is to work with biological material. In terms of the physical aspect thereof, the chamber may have different formats, provided the conditions for culture of the tissue of interest are complied with. The perfusion chamber developed makes it possible to achieve three‑dimensional culture of cells seeded in a matrix that, when correctly adapted to the perfusion chamber, promotes the passage of the flow through this scaffold, guaranteeing that the medium is able to reach the majority of the cells, if not all the cells, thereby promoting cell viability and proliferation.
