Abstract

A hand-held tape applicator device (10) for tape-assisted wound closure, for applying adhesive tape (18) to skin wherein a mechanical traction force is applied to the skin. The device (10) includes a casing (12); a spool (14) having a roll (16) of tape (18); and a tape cutting mechanism (20). A displaceable actuator (36) is pivotally mounted to the casing (12). Driven rollers (28) frictionally engage the tape. The actuator includes toothed pawls (46) which engage toothed ratchet wheels attached to the driven rollers (28) for driving rotation of the rollers and thereby dispensing tape. Taping is initiated by ejecting a length of tape from the device by driving rotation of the rollers (28). Positive engagement of the ratchet wheels by the pawls (46), provides for resistance to the tape feed, allowing for tensioning of the tape. For a greater traction force, the device (10) includes a brake pad (70) mounted to the actuator (36) for applying a braking force to the rollers (28).

Abstract

A recovery process includes contacting a powder comprising an admixture of yttrium oxide and europium oxide with an inorganic acid to form an acidic solution containing yttrium ions and europium ions. In a first multiple plate liquid-liquid extraction stage, the acidic solution (aqueous phase) is contacted with an organic solvent (organic phase) by countercurrent extraction, to extract, into the organic phase, yttrium ions, while the europium ions remain in the aqueous phase. The yttrium-rich organic phase (extract) is treated to recover a yttrium compound. The europium-rich aqueous phase (raffinate) is treated in a second multiple plate liquid-liquid extraction stage, where it is contacted with an organic solvent (organic phase) thereby to extract by means of countercurrent extraction europium ions into the organic phase. The europium-rich organic phase is treated to recover a europium compound.

Abstract

This invention relates to a flow control device, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a flow control device that can be used as a valve system for a cylinder of a reciprocating engine or compressor, and alternatively also as a valve actuator for use in controlling flow of a hydraulic fluid to a hydraulically actuated valve. The flow control device includes a flow distribution device having a distribution aperture, the distribution aperture being in continuous flow communication with an inlet; and a flow control assembly having a flow control passage provided therethrough. The flow control assembly and the flow distribution device are displaceable relative to one another, in order for the distribution aperture and the flow control passage to be displaceable between an at least partially aligned condition in which the inlet is in flow communication with an outlet; and an offset condition in which the flow control assembly prevents flow between the inlet and the outlet. The flow control passage has an effective length that is adjustable in order to adjust a period of the aligned condition.

Abstract

A method of grinding a mineral-containing ore, which includes grinding the mineral-containing ore in a primary milling process and thereafter fine grinding the mineral-containing ore in a secondary ball-mill. A composite grinding medium comprising a mixture of steel balls and pebbles is used in the secondary ball-mill. The pebbles have an average size which is relatively smaller than the average size of the balls. The grinding medium includes an optimum mixture of approximately 25% pebbles and 75% steel balls by volume. The pebbles have a hardness which is substantially equivalent to or relatively harder than the hardness of the mineral-containing ore. The use of the composite grinding medium including the optimum mixture of steel balls and pebbles results in significant savings in energy consumption together with a reduction in ball consumption.

Abstract

One aspect of the invention concerns a crop irrigation system for irrigating, in irrigation cycles, a crop (14), typically sugarcane, planted in crop row sets (16.1, 16.2, 16.3) in a field (10). The system has at least one main irrigation supply line (18) connected to a supply of water for supplying irrigation water to a number of crop row sets. There is a lateral pipe (24) connected to the main supply line for each of the crop row sets as well as an associated control valve (22) for each lateral pipe. Emitters (26) extend transversely from each lateral pipe into spaced apart ground furrows (28) between the crop rows (12) of the associated crop row set. The respective control valves are operated sequentially, in an irrigation cycle, to direct water from the main supply line in turn into each associated lateral pipe for a predetermined period of time, such that the ground furrows of each crop row set are sequentially supplied with water for the predetermined period of time through their associated lateral pipes and emitters. In the preferred system, the control valves (22) operate automatically and are purely mechanical, requiring no electrical supply. Other aspects of the invention concern the control valve and the irrigation method.
