A system and process of repairing a vehicle that has sustained structural or cosmetic damage. The system reviews reported repaired orders and compares those using artificial intelligence to an analysis of the vehicle. Repair procedures for the specific vehicle are then relayed to a user. The user is informed of any specialty equipment needed to perform a portion of that repair. The specialty equipment may then receive a repair program from the system to enable the repair. The user can then place that equipment in queue for appropriate use. Once all structural and cosmetic repairs have been performed, the system reports repair data to a database for later review. The system then determines if any subsequent repairs are need, such as the recalibration of an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). Should recalibration be required, the system then relays that information to a calibration center and the appropriate calibration is performed and recorded.

Automatic positioning of the lift arms may be performed based on identified lift points and may also include projection of an optical locator from a locator within the adapter.
A laser scanner determines the direction and distance of one or more targets by emitting two substantially parallel beams and receiving respective return beams. Components for handling the received beams are affixed to a monolithic block to ensure fixed relative placement. The direction of the target is determined using an optical encoder to reduce the timing window for interpolation to a fraction of the time it takes for the scanner to make a full revolution. A detection algorithm adapts detection thresholds for the different signatures of return signals depending on the distance to the target. Distance calculations are also adjusted for thermal expansion of the scanner components by including a temperature-variant thermometer output signal in the distance calculation algorithm. Target location and orientation information is used to adjust the location of ADAS calibration targets and perform the ADAS calibration process.

INTELLIGENT VEHICLE LIFT NETWORK WITH DISTRIBUTED SENSORS
An automation system uses cameras (134) and sensors (136) to identify a set of vehicle wheels within a lift area (118), then virtualizes the position and orientation of the vehicle relative to the lift posts (122, 130). Lift arms (124, 132) extending from the lift posts are moved to a first position that places a profile camera near the predicted position of lift points, and image analysis is used to positively identify the lift points. The lift arms are then moved to a second position that places an adapter camera below the identified lift points, and image analysis is used to confirm safe positioning below the lift point. Captured images and feedback from image analysis are used to improve and refine the system's ability to identify wheels, profile view lift points, and plan view lift points. The system may be integrated with lift arms allowing for automated rotation, extension, and elevation of lift adapters.

Conventional vehicle lifts typically operate at a standard speed that is statically configured for the system, which may result in vehicles that are below the weight rating for the lift being raised at the standard speed while the lift motor is capable of safely raising at greater speeds. One or more of a magnitude of electrical power drawn, a pressure generated by a hydraulic lifting, or a sensed vehicle weight may be used to provide an indication of load on the motor and/or a higher potential speed.

A PLL trained by recent segment timing further improves accuracy and precision. A detection algorithm adapts detection thresholds for the different signatures of return signals depending on the distance to the target. Distance calculations are also adjusted for thermal expansion of the scanner components by including a temperature-variant thermometer output signal in the distance calculation algorithm.

A hybrid 3D optical scanning system combining methodologies of active stereo 3D reconstruction and deflectometry to provide accurate 3D surface measurements of an object under inspection. In a preferred embodiment, the present system comprises a calibrated digital camera stereo pair and first digital projector for active stereo 3D reconstruction metrology positioned at selected distance apart on the same horizontal plane facing the inspection object at an optimal incidence angle relative to the object surface. A secondary digital projector for deflectometry is directed to project a pattern sequence across the optical projection path of the first digital projector and onto a nonplanar deflection screen extended between the digital camera and the inspection object at a selected angle relative thereto, the selected angle being chosen so that that the pattern projected onto the deflection screen by the secondary digital projector reflects from the surface of the inspection object towards the digital camera. Calibrated active stereo 3D reconstruction is used to derive global shape and the uncalibrated nonplanar deflected light acquires curvature of local fine deformations and surface imperfections along the object surface. The calibrated camera allows per pixel correlations to be defined between the separate acquisition methods and produces accurate absolute measurements of both shape and local features of specular, glossy, metallic curved surfaces.
