Abstract

An electrical resistance strain gage includes a uniformly distributed electrical resistance of the active measuring area and a discrete electrical trim resistance within an active measuring are. The trim resistance may include an electrical conductor in an electrically parallel circuit such that the electrical conductor may be selectively electrically removed from the strain gage to trim the electrical resistance of the strain gage. The trim resistance does not modify the active strain sensing area or uniform grid length.

A shear beam sensor is configured for use in a weight - sensing platform. The weight - sensing platform has a base and a top platform. The shear beam sensor has beam (200) including a top surface (204), a bottom surface and a side surface. The top surface is configured to be coupled to the top platform. The bottom surface is configured to be coupled to the base. A shear strain gage having a plurality of resistive grids (206, 208) is coupled to the side surface of the beam. The resistive grids are configured to minimize beam thickness. The shear strain gage can be coupled to the beam displaced from the beam center line. The shear strain gage can be configured to minimize spacing between the plurality of resistive grids. The shear strain gage can also be configured with a plurality of shunts coupled to each resistive grid.

Abstract

Strain gage resistance calibration using shunts. The strain gage includes an insulating, substrate. A resistive grid is formed on the substrate. A plurality of shunts are associated with the resistive grid, each of the shunts include one or more shunting bars. Severing a shunting bar alters (e.g., increases) the resistance of the resistive grid. Severing of the shunting bars can be performed by: chemical etching, electro-chemical etching, a laser beam, metal cutting and particle blasting. Shunting bars can be located on at least one edge of the resistive grid or in an internal area within the resistive grid. In a preferred embodiment, the insulating substrate is flexible.

Abstract

A methodology for selecting and properly placing foil strain gages on a transducer in a Wheatstone bridge, which provides a more consistent creep response, especially when the transducer temperature is changed. A transducer includes a counterforce subjected to a predetermined physical load that provides tension and compression strains (positive and negative, respectively). The transducer also includes a plurality of strain gage grids that are operatively attached to the counterforce in the tension and compression strain areas of the counterforce and generate electrical signals. The plurality of strain gages are electrically connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit where their electrical signals due to creep are cancelled.
