Abstract

A process for producing levulinic acid includes a step of catalytic conversion of a pentose (in particular xylose or arabinose) into furfural in an organic solvent having a boiling temperature from 60° C. to 220° C., followed by a step of reduction of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst and a protic solvent. Eventually, furfuryl alcohol is converted into levulinic acid directly or indirectly, by preliminary conversion into a levulinic acid ester and its subsequent hydrolysis. This process has a reduced environmental impact and guarantees satisfactory process yields on an industrial scale. In particular, the process allows to reduce as much as possible the formation of humins, which require complex and costly purification processes and involve a considerable reduction in the levulinic acid yields.

Abstract

A polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) containing monomer units of 3-hydroxybutyrate for use, by oral administration, in the prevention or treatment of an overweight or obesity condition, or of metabolic dysfunctions related to the condition. A marked effect was observed on the reduction of the body weight, both in the case of a standard diet and in the case of a diet rich in fats, a reduction that can be attributed to an increase in lipid oxidation to the detriment of the deposit of excess lipids, as confirmed by the decrease in the body weight and by analyses of the body composition. A positive effect on the metabolic dysfunctions related to an overweight or obesity condition has also been verified, in particular on dyslipidemias, such as the blood level of low-density lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol) and triglycerides, as well as an improvement in the inflammatory state.

Abstract

A filter element suitable for use in a smoking article, and a process for producing the same. The filter element comprises cellulose acetate fibers bonded together by means of a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) surrounding the cellulose acetate fibers. The PHA is used as bonding agent for the cellulose acetate fibers, instead of triacetin or other bonding agents, which is a highly biodegradable polymer that is able to bond the cellulose acetate fibers when applied on the fiber surface, causing the formation of random connection points to retain a space between the fibers suitable for a correct pressure drop during smoking and to impart a suitable hardness to the filter element. Moreover, since the PHA has a relatively high melting point and is substantially insoluble in water, it does not soften or melt when it is subjected to the warm and humid smoke produced during cigarette smoking, so as to prevent softening or collapsing of the filter element during smoking. Moreover, the presence of the PHA on the surface of the cellulose acetate fibers forming the filter element causes a remarkable reduction of toxic substances in the cigarette smoke, especially as regards reactive oxygen species

Abstract

The present invention relates to a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), and its relative formulation, for use in the treatment and/or prevention of diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms of the oral cavity. More specifically, the aforesaid use is carried out through the sequestration of pathogenic microorganisms by the PHA and consequent removal of the same from the dental surface. When introduced into the oral cavity, while not presenting any inhibitory activity towards the growth of cariogenic streptococci, the PHA is able to coaggregate these microorganisms on itself (in a more or less marked way according to the bacterial strain), thereby subtracting them from the interaction with the dental surface and the mucous membranes of the mouth. This property, which can be compared to a sort of "magnetic effect" by the PHA on microorganisms, can be usefully exploited since the PHA, on whose surface the coaggregation of microorganisms occurs quickly, can be easily removed, significantly reducing the bacterial load of the oral cavity, in particular the load of cariogenic and/or opportunist microorganisms responsible for many oral cavity diseases.

Abstract

The present invention relates to polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) containing monomer units of 3-hydroxybutyrate for use, by oral administration, in the prevention or treatment of an overweight or obesity condition, or of metabolic dysfunctions related to said condition.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) containing 3-hydroxybutyrate monomeric units for use in the prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC) by oral administration. Preferably, the PHA is polyhydrobutyrate (PHB). This is the surprising result of a non-pharmacological preclinical trial approach, which has been explored for prevention of CRC via the oral administration of a PHA in a rat model. The oral administration may be an enteral administration to a subject, e.g. to a subject that has a predisposition in developing CRC or has already shown at least one clinical symptom which is typical of an early stage of CRC. Alternatively, the oral administration may be a dietary administration, which can be directed to a vast majority of population, which wishes to obtain a preventive effect against the onset of CRC.

Abstract

Process for producing levulinic acid, wherein a carbohydrate-based substrate is subjected to a treatment step in aqueous environment at acid pH at a temperature from 120°C to 200°C, so as to obtain a reaction mixture comprising levulinic acid, 2,5- (hydroxymethyl ) furfural (HMF), formic acid, water- insoluble humins and water-soluble humins. This is then subjected to a filtration step, from which a liquid phase is obtained, comprising levulinic acid, HMF, formic acid, and water-soluble humins. After appropriate heating, a liquid-vapor mixture is obtained that is sent to a fractional distillation step, so as to obtain: a water-based head phase, an intermediate phase comprising formic acid, and a tail-end phase comprising levulinic acid, HMF, and water-soluble humins. From the tail-end phase, through a thin film evaporator a gaseous phase comprising levulinic acid and HMF, and a liquid phase comprising water-soluble humins are separated. The levulinic acid is separated from the HMF through fractional distillation. The process is characterized by reduced environmental impact, without the use of organic solvents, and guarantees satisfactory process yields on an industrial scale, with a suitable degree of purity of the levulinic acid for its most common applications.

Abstract

Cosmetic composition comprising: from 70% by weight to 99.9% by weight of a cosmetically acceptable base formulation comprising an oily phase; from 0.1% by weight to 30% by weight of at least one polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) in the form of particles having an average diameter (d50) of from 0.1 μm to 100 μm; the percentages being expressed with respect to the total weight of the composition. The PHA in the form of particles acts as a texturizing agent and ensures the desired consistency and flowability properties to the cosmetic composition during the application, as well as a reduced greasiness. In fact, the PHA particles have a strong ability to absorb oily substances, whereby they minimize the greasy effect and absorb excess sebum, making the skin less shiny. Moreover, they contribute to the so-called "soft focus" effect, i.e. an immediate filling and smoothing effect on wrinkles and cutaneous furrows, giving a greater shine and compactness to the skin.

Abstract

Method for the bioremediation of waters contaminated with hydrocarbons, which comprises putting said contaminated waters in contact with at least one polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and allowing microorganisms present in said contaminated waters and capable of metabolizing hydrocarbons, to develop and degrade the hydrocarbons under an aerobic condition. The PHA is preferably dispersed in the contaminated waters in the form of particles, in particular in the form of powder or microgranules. It has been surprisingly found that PHA is capable of stimulating alone, without the addition of other substances, the metabolic activity of microorganisms capable of metabolizing hydrocarbons, so as to obtain a significant reduction in environmental pollution in a relatively short time, without introducing extraneous non-biodegradable materials into the environment. A further increase in the bioremediation activity can be obtained by adding to the PHA at least one nutrient for microorganisms and/or at least one microorganism capable of metabolizing hydrocarbons.

Abstract

Process for recovering and purifying PHA from a cell culture, which comprises acidifying the cell culture so as to obtain a pH value equal to or lower than 6, and submitting said cell culture to a cell fractionation treatment by means of high pressure homogenization at a temperature from 10°C to 80°C, so as to obtain a PHA suspension. After the homogenization, the PHA suspension is basified up to obtain a pH value equal to or higher than 8, diluted and then subjected to tangential filtration. The PHA suspension is then bleached, diluted and again subjected to a tangential filtration. The product thus obtained is then dried. Such a process can be carried out continuously, without the use of organic solvents, and ensures that PHA is obtained in a pure form without causing a reduction in the molecular weight.

Abstract

A process for producing hydroxyalkanoate copolymers, which comprises: (i) pre-treating a sucrose-containing feedstock in an acidic solution; (ii) feeding the pre-treated feedstock into a bioreactor containing polyhydroxyalkanoate producing microbial cells; (iii) cultivating the polyhydroxyalkanoate producing microbial cells to form a cell mass containing the hydroxyalkanoate copolymers; (iv) recovering the hydroxyalkanoate copolymers from the cell mass. The pre-treating step has the main function of hydrolyzing sucrose into glucose and fructose, which in turn are converted into 4-ketovaleric acid to give a mixture of mono-saccharides and organic precursors for microbial synthesis of hydroxyalkanoate copolymers, and particularly of PHBVV ter-polymers. Complex and expensive purification processes of the substrates obtained from the pre-treating step are not needed. The solutions can be directly used as the feeding solutions for microbial PHA biosynthesis.
