The present invention relates to improved herpes simplex viruses 1 having improved direct oncolytic effects. The improved direct oncolytic effects provided by the viruses of the invention will also lead to improved systemic anti-tumor immune effects, and hence improved therapeutic effects in patients. Enhanced replication in and killing of tumor cells will result in enhanced tumor antigen release and enhanced systemic immune responses to the released antigens.
