Abstract

Ion-pairs known as GUMBOS (group of uniform materials based on organic salts) from antiseptics (chlorhexidine and octenidine) and the beta-lactam antibiotic, ceftriaxone. The antimicrobial efficacy of these GUMBOS and unreacted stoichiometric equivalent mixtures were compared to ceftriaxone and azithromycin alone. On a molar basis, GUMBOS were equivalent to ceftriaxone and 10× more effective in killing N. gonorrhoeae than azithromycin. They were more than 100× more effective than either antibiotic in killing CRE. A strategy involving the electrostatic interaction between a common antiseptic and a discontinued antibiotic (octenidine and carbenicillin) was also evaluated as a treatment for gonorrhoea. Abstract

A microRNA sensing platform is disclosed that is sensitive, accurate, easy to use, affordable, and that does not require expensive equipment on the part of the end-user. The sensing system can be used as a sensitive and accurate miRNA profiling platform to monitor the progression of diseases, or treatment regimen, or personalized diagnosis, or personalized prognosis. The entire RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which holds the mature miRNA, is preserved in the system. The RISC is allowed to perform its native functions. These native functions not only protect the miRNA from degradation during the isolation process, but can also help eliminate false targets. The system sensitively and selectively responds to the presence or absence of RISCs bearing the target miRNA.

Abstract

System and methods for enabling a mobile robot for autonomous missions are described. Despite some mobile robots having the capability of safely traversing complex terrains, mobile robots still behave like a typical machine which can only respond to a human's commands via an interactive controller. For example, a human will drive the mobile robot to desired locations, position it, and activate actions as desired in order to complete a mission. As such, it is desirable to enable a mobile robot with the capability of executing and completing a mission without a human's involvement. The present disclosures includes innovative technology which enables an ordinary user to quickly define a complex mission in the form that a mobile robot can understand and automatically execute it accordingly.

Abstract

Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for identifying potential therapeutics for pathogens (bacterial or viral). The system can receive a plurality of molecules known to have interactions with a pathogen, fragment the plurality of molecules into a plurality of linkers and a plurality of rigids, and remove redundancies from the plurality of linkers and the plurality of rigids. The system can then identify a plurality of possible molecules formed from the fragments, evaluate those possible molecules for toxicity, and analyze the non-toxic candidates using a convolutional neural network associated with the pathogen. The final candidates can then be used for in-vivo testing.

Abstract

Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for an adjustable neural network. Systems measure feature applicability for an octave of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) at a standard scale, resulting in (1) at least one drop-off point where the octave no longer resonates with pre-defined features; and (2) a common drop-off between the CNN and at least one other CNN trained on at least one other separate domain. The system can then measure octave resonance for a plurality of CNNs trained on large data sets with a distribution of octaves for features, and measure a pattern of octaves learned in the CNN, resulting in a measurement pattern. The system can then compare that measurement pattern to the pre-defined features, resulting in a level of adaptability of the CNN, and modify the CNN based on the level of adaptability of the CNN, resulting in a modified CNN.

Abstract

A system and method are provided for reconstructing 3-D point cloud. A light source generates light that is received by a polarization field generator, which generates a polarization field that illuminates the target object being imaged such that each outgoing ray has a unique polarization state. A camera captures images of the illuminated target object and the captured images are received by a processor that: (1) performs a polarization field decoding algorithm that decodes the polarization field to obtain a set of incident rays; (2) performs a camera ray decoding algorithm to obtain a set of camera rays; (3) performs a ray-ray intersection algorithm that determines intersection points where the incident rays and the camera rays intersect; and (4) performs a 3-D reconstruction algorithm that uses the set of incident rays, the set of camera rays and the intersection points to reconstruct a 3-D point cloud of the target object.

Abstract

A composition and method for killing feral hogs: a bait that is attractive to hogs is mixed with a lethal amount of sodium nitrite, along with sufficient base to inhibit decomposition of the sodium nitrite. At sufficiently high pH, encapsulation of the sodium nitrite is not required to inhibit decomposition. In the absence of substantial decomposition, the sodium nitrite itself is not aversive to the pigs, and may even enhance acceptance of the baits by the pigs. Optionally, an anti-emetic compound is added to the mixture to reduce the likelihood the bait will be vomited. Optionally, an additional toxicant such as luteolin is added to the mixture.

Abstract

Modulation of inward potassium ion conductance with structurally diverse small-molecules in the arthropod salivary gland induces arthropod salivary gland failure that results in a reduction or elimination in the ability of the arthropod to feed. Administering Kir channel inhibitors reduces food intake, increases feeding time, reduces salivary gland secretion, induces mortality, and reduces transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Kir channel inhibitors induce these adverse effects in ticks, mosquitoes, horn flies, and aphids.

Abstract

Protected quantum dots are protected from degradation, particularly in aqueous environments, The system comprises quantum dots, hydrophobic core, and hydrophilic shell. The quantum dots are entrapped in and protected by the hydrophobic core. The core polymer is covalently bonded to a hydrophilic shell polymer or protein. Quantum yield is better maintained than for non-encapsulated quantum dots in an aqueous environment. Optionally, ligands are attached to the hydrophilic shell to target delivery of the protected quantum dots, In an alternative embodiment, quantum dots are entrapped in the hydrophilic shell, or in both the shell and the core.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a DC mechanical circuit breaker that can utilize two switches, one of which can generate zero-crossing with an alternate oscillatory circuit for the other one, which can be a conventional zero-crossing-based AC breaker and can be used in the main circuit. This is different from the conventional single-switch commute-and-absorb method currently used. The present disclosure shows that disclosed circuit breaker improves the fault current extinction and significantly reduces the voltage rate-of-change while creating the current zero-crossing faster compared to the available technology. Thus, disclosed circuit breaker is capable of interrupting high DC currents with minimal arc through a less expensive AC circuit breaker. Simulation and hardware results are provided to show the efficiency of the disclosed circuit breaker.
