Abstract

A lithium-ion electrochemical battery includes a housing, an anode (18), a cathode (22), a separator (24), and a nonaqueous organic electrolyte (26). According to another aspect, the cathode (22) includes lithium. According to yet another aspect, the anode (18) is carbonaceous and graphitized. According to a further aspect, an organic electrolyte (26) composition includes a lithium salt, a non-aqueous solvent, and a fluorinated cyclic carbonate co-solvent. In an aspect of the present battery (20), a capacity of a lithium-containing cathode (22) is greater than an intercalation storage limit of a carbonaceous anode (18), yielding a negative to positive ("N/P") ratio between the electrodes (26, 28) of about 0.01 to 0.999. The low N/P ratio and organic electrolyte (26) composition beneficially enables concurrent lithium-ion intercalation and controlled lithium-metal plating within the cell.

Abstract

Blockchain-based systems for processing transactions (including, for example, smart contract platforms) are resource intensive and lack sufficient flexibility and scalability. A new framework is disclosed herein, which allows for scalable and flexible deployment of a new class of smart contracts. In some embodiments, transactions according to a given smart contract are processed via a centralized consortium of cells (e.g., cloud nodes) via a consensus overlay method. The cells may confirm results of performing a transaction or set of transactions on a periodic basis, which may be done by fingerprinting the data state for participating smart contracts. This fingerprint can then be stored via a Blockchain method, and verified.

Abstract

The disclosure relates to methods, apparatus, and compositions for analyzing a sample for the presence or absence of a target DNA analyte. A sample mixture is formed, which includes a sample to be analyzed and a nanoparticle-probe adduct. The nanoparticle-probe adduct is a non-covalently-bound adduct between a functionalized carbohydrate-capped metal nanoparticle and a functionalized oligonucleotide probe specific to the target DNA analyte. Upon thermal treatment of the sample mixture, a nanoparticle-probe-DNA complex forms when the target DNA analyte is present in the sample. Upon addition of a destabilizing agent (such as an acid) to the thermally treated sample mixture, remaining non-complexed nanoparticle-probe adduct will aggregate or otherwise becomes destabilized, creating a rapidly detectable color change that can be detected and correlated to the presence or absence of the target DNA in the original sample. Related apparatus, kits, and compositions for performing the methods are also disclosed.

Abstract

The disclosure relates to epoxidized lignin prepolymers, related methods of making the prepolymers, cured epoxy resins formed from the prepolymers, articles including a coating of the cured epoxy resins, and related curing methods and compositions. The epoxidized lignin prepolymer has an epoxide functionality in a range of 2 to 8 and a high solubility in various common organic solvents. The high solubility permits incorporation of the epoxidized lignin prepolymer into an epoxy system which cures after addition of curing agents at high enough concentrations to allow replacement of conventional epoxide prepolymers at levels up to 100% replacement. Using other biobased materials in addition to lignin, for example biobased epichlorohydrin to epoxidize the lignin and a biobased hardener to cure the prepolymer, can provide a corresponding cured epoxy resin that is formed from completely biobased materials.

Abstract

The disclosure relates to adhesive compositions, including non-crosslinked resins and crosslinked/cured adhesives joining substrates, as well as related methods for making the compositions and articles. Compared to a conventional phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) resin, the disclosed methods and compositions use lignin (L), formaldehyde (F), and optionally higher aldehydes (A) as corresponding replacements to provide an analog to a conventional PF resin with biobased reactants. Due to the differing reactivity of the LF components compared to the PF components, the initial condensation reaction between ortho-reactive sites in the lignin and the aldehyde is controlled to prevent gelation of the aqueous reaction mixture while reacting substantially all of the LF reactants to provide a non-crosslinked resin reaction product. The resin reaction product can then be cured at high temperature/high pressure conditions to provide a crosslinked adhesive, for example joining two substrates.

Abstract

The disclosure relates to methods for forming oxyalkylated lignin polyols as well as related polyols and polymers. In the various methods, an initial reaction mixture including a cyclic alkyl carbonate and a wet lignin is heated in the absence of an oxyalkylation catalyst to remove at least a portion of the water from the reaction mixture. An oxyalkylation catalyst is added to the resulting dehydrated reaction mixture, which is then heated to perform an oxyalkylation reaction between the cyclic alkyl carbonate with the lignin, thereby forming an oxyalkylated lignin polyol reaction product. The oxyalkylated lignin polyol can be subsequently reacted with a polyisocyanate or a polyacid compound to form a corresponding polyurethane or polyester polymer, respectively. The disclosure further relates to the oxyalkylated lignin polyols and corresponding polymers formed therefrom.

Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method for chemically recycling a condensation polymer, which includes melt-processing a mixture including a condensation polymer and an internal catalyst to increase the amorphous content of the polymer, followed by depolymerizing polymer in a reaction medium with a reactive solvent. Melt-processing and quenching of a condensation polymer generally reduces the crystalline content of the polymer and correspondingly increases the amorphous content of the polymer, which makes the polymer more amenable to subsequent depolymerization. Inclusion of the internal catalyst, for example a volatile organic catalyst, during melt-processing not only improves the relative degree of amorphization during melt-processing, but it also enhances the rate and conversion of the depolymerization stage that would otherwise be rate-limited by mass transport of an external catalyst from the bulk reaction medium to the polymer surface for depolymerization.

Abstract

New systems and methods allow for transmission of multiple types of content protocols over a unidirectional content delivery network, such as a television broadcast. Hardware and/or software used at the network transmission location (such as a television broadcast station) and hardware and/or software located at an endpoint (such as a home television, car infotainment system, or first responder location) allow for a native ATSC 1.0 signal to have embedded within it additional content that is not encoded as ATSC 1.0 content. The non-ATSC 1.0 content can be detected and segregated from ATSC 1.0 content so that the endpoint devices (such as a television receiver) will not attempt to render the non-ATSC 1.0 content (such as, e.g., ATSC 3.0 content or application specific content) as normal ATSC 1.0 programming. Instead, the non-ATSC 1.0 content will be separately decoded, assembled, and processed to allow for multiple types of content to be used and displayed by the endpoint, even though the broadcast signal was transmitted only

Abstract

Nitrogen-based agricultural crop fertilizers are known to be a source of N2O emission, due to various direct and indirect processes. For example microbial activity, volatilization from spraying, volatilization from evaporative processes, and the like cause N2O emission. From a standpoint of environmental science, various “precision conservation” methods and adaptations to nitrogen fertilizer application can mitigate these processes. By reducing these processes, and thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, carbon credit programs can be leveraged.
