Abstract

A transmission capable of being assembled as a coolerless transmission and a transmission having an oil cooler includes a housing and a lubrication system. The oil passage system includes an oil passage having an oil outlet opening extending out of the housing and an oil inlet opening extending into the housing. A bypass flow passage is disposed in the housing in communication with the oil outlet opening and the oil inlet opening. In a coolerless configuration a pair of plugs are inserted in the oil outlet opening and the oil inlet opening, respectively, to close off the oil outlet opening and the oil inlet opening so that oil flows from the oil outlet opening to the oil inlet opening through the bypass flow passage. In a transmission configuration having an oil cooler, an exterior oil cooler is connected to the oil outlet opening and the oil inlet opening.

Abstract

A transmission includes an input shaft coupled to a prime mover, a countershaft, main shaft, and an output shaft, with gears between the countershaft and the main shaft. A shift actuator selectively couples the input shaft to the main shaft by rotatably coupling gears between the countershaft and the main shaft. The shift actuator is mounted on an exterior wall of a housing including the countershaft and the main shaft. An integrated actuator housing is operationally coupled to the shift actuator and a linear clutch actuator. The linear clutch actuator is a self-adjusting actuator, and the transmission includes a self-adjusting clutch.

Abstract

A vehicle transmission can perform predictive shifting. Road grade and vehicle path data can be employed to identify a future change in road grade such as a hill. A change in speed relative to a vehicle cruise speed can be estimated or predicted in view of the change in road grade and a current gear. If the change of speed is determined to be outside a performance bound, shift recommendation can be determined to maintain vehicle cruise speed within the performance bound. A controller can alter default gear selection of the transmission in response to receipt of the shift recommendation.

Abstract

A method of shifting an automated transmission in a vehicle comprises tracking vehicle parameters and determining a current gear selection. An upshift threshold can be determined for the current gear selection. Future gradient conditions are determined in a lookahead distance and are processed to determine a first percentage of future conditions that are above a selected gradient threshold. The first percentage of future conditions is compared to a selected first percentage limit to determine that the first percentage of future conditions is within the first percentage limit. The upshift threshold for the current gear selection is adjusted to change the vehicle parameter at which the vehicle transmission shifts from the current gear selection to the adjacent gear. The automated transmission is computer-controlled to shift to the adjacent gear according to the adjusted upshift threshold. A downshift threshold can also be adjusted.

Abstract

A system for operating a dual clutch transmission, including launch/creep controller, shift logic, and a clutch control assembly. The shift logic is configured to intercept a torque command including a target clutch torque from the launch/creep controller as it transmits the target clutch torque to the clutch assembly. The shift logic engages a preparation phase that increases torque on an on-coming clutch to a prefill torque. The shift logic then engages a torque phase that transfers torque between the off-going clutch and the on-coming clutch by simultaneously decreasing the off-going clutch torque and increasing the on-coming clutch torque. The off-going clutch and the on-coming clutch remain in a slipping state that maintains the target clutch torque during the transfer.
