Abstract

An orthosis is suitable for treating a joint of a subject that includes an amputated limb. The orthosis may be suitable for treating hinge joints (e.g., knee joint, elbow joint, and ankle joint) or ellipsoidal joints (e.g., wrist joint, finger joints, and toe joints) of the body. The orthosis includes a residual-limb cuff for coupling a residual limb to the orthosis. The residual-limb cuff includes a residual-limb liner. The residual-limb liner includes a liner body configured to surround the residual limb.

Abstract

An orthosis for increasing range of motion of a joint applies a dynamic stretch to the joint in either extension or flexion. The orthosis includes ones or more dynamic force mechanisms configured to apply dynamic stretch to one or more body portions of the body joint. The dynamic force mechanism includes a resilient force element. The dynamic force mechanism applies a dynamic extension force to the body portion when an actuator mechanism is operated to transmit an extension force to the dynamic force mechanism. The dynamic force mechanism applies a dynamic flexion force to the body portion when the actuator mechanism is operated to transmit a flexion force to the dynamic force mechanism.

Abstract

An orthosis for stretching tissue around a joint of a patient between first and second relatively pivotable body portions. The orthosis includes a first arm member affixable to the first body portion and including a first extension member extending therefrom. A second arm member affixable to the second body portion is also included and has a second extension member having an arcuate shape extending therefrom. A third arm member including a third extension member having an arcuate shape extending therefrom is interposed between the first and second arm members. The third arm member is operatively connected to the first and second arm members, such that the first and third arm members travel along an arcuate path defined by the second extension member when the third arm member is moved from a first position to a second position relative to the second arm member. Furthermore, the first arm member can slide along the third extension member as the third arm member is moved from the first position to the second position relative to the second arm member.

Abstract

An orthosis for stretching the tissue around a foot and a toe of a wearer includes a first member affixable to the foot and a second member operatively connected to the first member and affixable to the toe. A gear is connected to the second member and rotates relative to the first member to impart movement of the second member relative to the first member. A drive assembly is operatively coupled to the gear and drives rotation of the gear, thereby driving movement of the second member relative to the first member such that the toe moves relative to the foot.

Abstract

An orthosis for increasing range of motion of a body joint. The orthosis includes a rotational linkage mechanism having a driving link and a driven link configured for rotation about a joint axis. The driven link is selectively attachable to a body part to rotate the body part about the joint axis. A dynamic force mechanism is operatively connected between the driving link and driven link to impart a dynamic force upon the driven link when the driving link rotates relative to the driven link and the driven link resists rotation with the driving link due to a resistance force imparted on the driven link by the body part reaching a maximum range of motion. The dynamic force is transferred through the driven link to the body part.

Abstract

An ankle foot orthosis includes a leg member, a foot member, and a drive member. The drive assembly includes a link member which may be hingedly secured to the foot member at a hinge location adjacent to the posterior end of the foot member. The drive assembly may be operable to selectively impart pivotal movement between the foot member and the link member about a first pivot axis, and pivotal movement between the foot member and the leg member about a second pivot axis at the hinge location. The leg member and the foot member strut may be selectively movable in a medial-lateral direction relative to a base of the foot member and the drive assembly. The inferior-superior location of the second pivot axis may be selectively adjustable for substantially aligning the second pivot axis with an axis of rotation of an ankle joint of the wearer.

Abstract

The application is directed to devices and methods useful for expanding the range of motion of joints based on principles of stress relaxation and creep. Expanded range of motion is achieved by placing body parts near the joint in positions that stretch tissue around the joint. Even when the device is in any one position, it can impart forces on the body members to urge them to stretch surrounding tissue even further.

Abstract

Therapeutic abduction of the shoulder joint is achieved using a hinged device, the hinge activated by a cable passed between pulleys to increase mechanical advantage. The cable is wound on a spool mounted on a ratcheting mechanism, whereby tension is maintained as the spool is wound via a knob or computer controlled motor. A rotation control device enables rotation of the spool by a user, but prevents rotation due to a load. Mating shackles pivot in connection with the hinge, and are activated by the cable to increase the angle of the hinge. The hinge is connected to the body, one portion affixed relative to the body, the other affixed relative to the upper arm. As the hinge angle is expanded, the shoulder joint is abducted, stretching the tissue of the joint. If resilient, the cable imparts a dynamic tensioning force to the shoulder joint. Medial or lateral rotation is accomplished by a second device disposed at the elbow, wherein the pivot point of internal/external rotation is along the axis of the upper arm.

Abstract

The present invention provides a new and improved orthosis for use in effecting relative movement between bones in an arm of a patient. The apparatus includes a lower cuff gripping distal bone, such as a wrist, and an upper cuff gripping a proximal bone, such as an upper arm. The lower cuff is secured in a rotatable drive assembly substantially coincident to a longitudinal axis of a medial bone, such as the forearm, during rotational distal adjustment. The angle between the forearm and the upper arm is adjustable and can be securely fixed at a desired angle. The rotation of the rotatable drive assembly effectuates the pronation and supination of the hand and wrist relative to the patient's forearm. The orthosis of the present invention can be disassembled with interchanging parts substituted depending on the patient's needs.

The second extension member is operatively connected to the first extension member and travels through and within the arcuate channel, along the arcuate path, when the second arm member is moved from a first position to a second position relative to the first member.

Abstract

The present invention provides an orthosis for stretching tissue around a joint of a patient between first and second relatively pivotable body portions. The orthosis includes a first member affixable to the first body portion and including a first extension member extending therefrom. A second member affixable to the second body portion is also included and has a second extension member having an arcuate shape extending therefrom. The second extension member is operatively connected to the first extension member and travels through the first extension member along an arcuate path when the second arm member is moved from a first position to a second position relative to the first arm member.
