Abstract

The invention relates to barley plants having a high α-amylase activity and fast β- glucan degradation during malting. The barley plants of the invention may for example carry a point mutation in the CXE2L1 gene, wherein said mutated CXE2L1 gene encodes a mutant CXE2L1 polypeptide. The invention further provides plant products prepared from said barley plants.

Abstract

In traditional plant breeding approaches, chemical mutagenesis may be utilized to introduce nucleotide substitutions at random in the genome of a plant, i.e. without possibilities to control the sites of nucleotide changes. Because of genome complexities, the statistical probability is extremely little when it comes to finding a predetermined nucleotide substitution. The present invention, however, demonstrates how a novel, alternative use of digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR), preferably droplet dPCR (ddPCR), is developed to exploit finding of specific nucleotide substitutions in mutated genes. The entire platform comprises a screening method with a library of mutagenized organisms, digital PCR—based systems and a set-up to propagate and analyze identified, mutated organisms.

Abstract

While eliminating a protein of interest in a eukaryotic organism is relatively straightforward, non-GMO methods based on nucleotide substitutions for modulating the translational efficiency and levels of a protein towards a pre-determined aim have proven difficult. This is due to the complexity of the protein expression machinery which makes it difficult to predict and elucidate the effects of a substitution in a nucleotide sequence on the modulation of an endogenous protein expression. The present invention relates to a method for modulating levels of a protein of interest in a eukaryotic organism of a species of interest, leading to increasing the probability of either higher or lower levels of the protein of interest. Further, the present invention relates to an eukaryotic organism comprising one or more mutation(s) associated with this modulation.

Abstract

The present invention relates, generally, to germination and preparation of aqueous extracts of cereals (e.g. prepared through mashing), including processes used to produce beer. The invention thus provides methods for fast germination and preparation of aqueous extracts of cereals. The methods significantly speed up the process of preparing wort for production of cereal-based beverages, while maintaining the potential for preparing said wort with low levels of β-glucan. The instant invention is equally applicable to the germination and preparation of aqueous extracts of other cereal grains - including rice, sorghum, maize, millet and wheat - as well as brewing processes comprising adjuncts.

The entire platform comprises a screening method with a library of mutagenized organisms, digital PCR-based systems and a set-up to propagate and analyze identified, mutated organisms.

The entire platform comprises a screening method with a library of mutagenized organisms, digital PCR -based systems and a set-up to propagate and analyze identified, mutated organisms.

Abstract

The invention provides a membrane separation system with membranes arranged between flow spacers in a stack. The flow spacers are formed with apertures (27-A, 29-B, 30-B) forming inlet ducts and outlet ducts, and due to the design of the flow spacer, increased sealing may be obtained between adjacent compartments in the stack and decreased potential for contamination can be expected.

Abstract

A method of coating hydroxylated surfaces by gas phase grafting is described. Especially acyl groups, silyl groups and/or alkyl groups are located on the surface of materials by gas phase grafting. The grafting method is a dry process. The material to coat can be organic or inorganic materials. The produced surface coated material are strong and durable and material normally not water-proof can be water-proof due to the surface treating. Examples of items produced from surface treated material may be water-proof cardboard boxes, other containers, furniture, interior for cars and boats. Items produced from organic materials such as from plant parts are biodegradable.

Abstract

The invention relates to a polymer material with several advantageous properties. The polymer material has a low degree of swelling in water, it is biodegradable, it has extremely low permeability to gasses such as CO2 and it has a high strength. The polymer material is useful for a number of purposes, such as for preparing containers for food or beverages. The polymer material is prepared from a prepolymerisation mixture comprising grafted plant derived material and monomers and/or cross-linkers.

Abstract

According to the invention, there is provided null-LOX-1 barley and plant products produced thereof, such as malt manufactured by using barley kernels defective in synthesis of the fatty acid-converting enzyme lipoxygenase-1. Said enzyme accounts for the principal activity related to conversion of linoleic acid into 9-hydroperoxy octadecadienoic acid, a lipoxygenase pathway metabolite, which-through further enzymatic or spontaneous reactions-may lead to the appearance of trans-2-nonenal. The invention enables brewers to produce a beer devoid of detectable trans-2-nonenal-specific off flavors, even after prolonged storage of the beverage.

BARLEY FOR PRODUCTION OF FLAVOR-STABLE BEVERAGE

IPC Classes  ?

  • C12C 1/18 - Preparation of malt extract or of special kinds of malt, e.g. caramel, black malt
  • C12N 15/82 - Vectors or expression systems specially adapted for eukaryotic hosts for plant cells
