Abstract

A polymeric composite material is disclosed. The material can include a continuous polymeric matrix that includes a thermoset polymer or a blend of thermoset polymers having a polyester, an epoxy, a nylon, or a polysiloxane, and a discontinuous phase including a plurality of polymeric aerogel particles dispersed within the continuous polymeric matrix, wherein the polymeric aerogel particles include a porous polymeric network. The polymer from the porous polymeric network of the plurality of polymeric aerogel particles can be in direct contact with the continuous polymeric matrix. The thermal conductivity (W/m·K) of the polymeric composite material can be lower when compared with the same polymeric composite material that does not include the discontinuous phase having the plurality of polymeric aerogel particles. The dielectric constant of the composite can be decreased when compared with the same composite that does not include the discontinuous phase having the plurality of polymeric aerogel particles.

Abstract

A composite comprising a non-fibrous organic polymer aerogel layer having a first surface and an opposing second surface and a support layer having a first surface and an opposing second surface is disclosed. An interface can be formed between a portion of the first surface of the aerogel layer and a portion of the second surface of the support layer such that the aerogel and support layers are attached to one another. A majority of the volume of the aerogel layer does not have to include the support layer. The composite can have a thickness of 3 mils to 16 mils.

Abstract

Disclosed is a method for producing an organic polymer aerogel and corresponding aerogels and articles of manufacture comprising such aerogels. The method can include polymerizing an organic polymerizable material in the presence of an organic solvent having a high vapor pressure and/or a low boiling point to obtain an organic polymer gel comprising an organic polymer matrix and the organic solvent, and sub critical or ambient drying the organic polymer gel under conditions suitable to remove the step (a) organic solvent and form an organic polymer aerogel.
