Abstract

Calanus finmarchicus and the use thereof to prevent or treat formation of atherosclerotic plaques and hence development of coronary heart disease. The composition comprises the same marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) generally regarded as being responsible for the anti-atherosclerotic effect of marine oils, namely EPA (C20:5n-3 eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (C22:6n-3 docosahexaenoic acid). However, quite unexpectedly, it has been found that the oil composition of the present invention has a remarkably higher ability to prevent formation of atherosclerotic plaques than what can be attributed to EPA and DHA alone, and moreover, unlike EPA and DHA alone it has a notable blood cholesterol lowering effect.

Abstract

This invention relates to an oil composition, preferably obtained from a copepod, and the use thereof to reduce accumulation of visceral fat and counteract impairment of heart function caused by obesity inducing Western diets. The oil composition of the present invention can thus be used to reduce abdominal obesity and improve glucose tolerance and thus to reduce the risk of obesity related diseases such as but not limited to type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease, or to prevent or treat such diseases.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a trawl (1) for harvesting calanus or other organisms in a body of water. The trawl (1) comprises an outer net (6) and an inner net (8) located inside it, where the inner net (8) is divided up into a number of sections (81, 82, 83). Each section (81, 82, 83) has its own attachment point to the outer net (8), whereby the towing forces are distributed over the different attachment points, with the result that each of the sections (81, 82, 83) absorbs a load. The sections (81, 82, 83) overlap one another by a certain length in such a manner that a front section (81, 82, 83) will extend past and on the inside of the attachment point to a section (82, 83) located at the rear. In addition to better distribution of the towing forces, the independence of the different sections (81, 82, 83) will facilitate repairs and/or replacements of the inner net (8), reduce problems resulting from different lengths between the outer and inner nets (6, 8) during towing of the trawl (1), simplify inclusion of selection devices and offer better possibilities for use of differentiated aperture, strand thickness and different materials in the inner net (8).
