Abstract

A colour change system for a powder coating facility comprises a plurality of containers 24a-24e each with a different colour powders; a conduit for conveying powder from one of the containers 24a-24e to a coating applicator 12; a suction unit 18 connected to the conduit and having an end-piece with a powder-drawing inlet opening; a cleaning unit 34; a translation mechanism for moving the end-piece; and a controller. The containers 24a-24e and the cleaning unit 34 each have an opening 25 for receiving the end piece. The controller effects a change of powder colour by controlling the translation mechanism to extract the end-piece from a first container 24d, to move it to the cleaning unit 34, and after cleaning to move the end piece to a second container 24e. The system allows automated cleaning between colour changes, which reduces operating downtime.

Abstract

An active surge chamber for use in a paint supply system comprising a paint channel, a fluid chamber connected to a pressurised fluid supply, a diaphragm, a spring, and means responsive to movement of the diaphragm for effecting connection and disconnection of the pressurised fluid supply to the fluid chamber and for relieving pressure of fluid in the chamber. The paint channel is sealingly separated from the fluid chamber by the diaphragm. The spring has a spring rate such that the force exerted on the diaphragm by the spring restricts movement of the diaphragm over a selected range of pump outlet pressures in order to attenuate the movement of the diaphragm and reduce the susceptibility of the system to unwanted oscillation. Pressure fluctuations in a paint flow induced by usage of a reciprocating pump upstream of the active surge chamber are minimised.

Abstract

A positive displacement pump for pumping a fluid mastic comprises a plurality of cylinders each having a piston arranged for reciprocal motion within the cylinder. Movement of the piston in a first direction draws the fluid into the cylinder and movement in a second, opposite direction pumps the fluid out of the cylinder. A variable speed electric motor is drivingly coupled to a cam arrangement providing a reciprocating drive to the pistons. The cam arrangement comprises cams shaped and arranged to drive each piston in the first direction over less than half of a rotational cycle and to drive each piston in the second direction over the remainder of the rotational cycle. The cams are arranged to drive the pistons out of phase with one another.

Abstract

A paint circulating system 10 and a pressure relief module 40 utilized therein are described. The paint circulating system 10 comprises a pressurized paint supply pipeline 22, a tank return pipeline 34 and a pressure relief module 40. The pressure relief module 40 comprises: a first flow chamber 65 through which pressurized paint is provided to said supply pipeline 22; a second flow chamber 69 through which paint returns to said tank return pipeline 34; an orifice 42 interconnecting said first and second flow chambers; and a valve member 46 biased towards the orifice so as to block said orifice. The valve member 46 is moveable in response to a pressure in said first flow chamber 65 exceeding a predetermined relief pressure so as to displace said valve member 46 to open said orifice 42. This allows paint to flow from said first flow chamber 65 into said second flow chamber 69, preventing failure occurring in the paint circulating system 10.

Abstract

A novel changeover mechanism for a compressed air driven double diaphragm pump comprises a shaft slidably mounted through aligned apertures in opposing surfaces of the twin diaphragm chambers. At the center of the shaft between the two diaphragm chambers is provided an annular notch in to which is located an arm extending from a U shaped frame. The U shaped frame is pivotally mounted atop a valve plate which includes multiple ports. Positioned against a surface of the valve plate is a valve closure component which is configured to slide across the surface selectively obstructing the multiple ports. The valve closure component is held in place by a metal peg hingedly mounted in slots provided in parallel extension of the U shaped frame. Linear tension springs connect the hinged wire pusher with U shaped frame adjacent the pivot point. The springs bias the position of the valve closure component against the valve plate in an off center position.

Abstract

A charge remaining in an electrostatic coater when power supply to the electrostatic coater is stopped is neutralized at an early stage. A rotary atomizing head 102 receives a high voltage of negative polarity from a cascade 104. An electrostatic coater 100 further includes a second high-voltage generator 110 that generates a high voltage of positive polarity. The second high-voltage generator 110 is composed of a Cockcroft-Walton circuit. The Cockcroft-Walton circuit is composed of diodes and capacitors. A high voltage of the electrostatic coater 100 is controlled by a controller 10. Immediately after running of the electrostatic coater 100 is stopped by stopping power supply to the cascade 104, power is supplied to the second high-voltage generator 110. The high voltage of positive polarity generated by the second high-voltage generator 110 is supplied to the rotary atomizing head 102 for a predetermined time period.
