A vinyl ester/ethylene copolymer is prepared by emulsion copolymerization of a monomer mixture comprising at least one vinyl ester, ethylene, a stabilizing system comprising polyvinyl alcohol and a free radical redox polymerization initiator system comprising i-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidizing agent and at least one of a sulfinic acid-based compound and erythorbic acid or a salt thereof as a reducing agent. A polymer dispersion comprises particles of a polymer composition formed at least partially by emulsion polymerization of first and second, simultaneously added, substantially styrene-free monomer feeds in the presence of an initiator in a reaction zone. The first monomer feed comprises monomers selected to produce a copolymer having a glass transition temperature less than or equal to about -10°C, while the second monomer feed comprises monomers selected to produce a copolymer having a glass transition temperature greater than or equal to about 50°C. FUEL PELLETS AND BRIQUETTES, THEIR PRODUCTION AND USE
Disclosed are low-formaldehyde aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester/ethylene, e.g., vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE), copolymers suitable for use in adhesives for applications such as tobacco or food products wherein only very low levels of formaldehyde are permitted. Such dispersions are prepared by emulsion copolymerization of a monomer mixture comprising a vinyl ester, ethylene, a stabilizing system comprising polyvinyl alcohol preferably having a degree of hydrolysis of at least 97 mole%, and a selected type of free radical redox polymerization initiator system. This selected redox initiator system comprises both a water-insoluble oxidizing agent and a sulfinic acid-based reducing agent. The monomer mixture which is polymerized is substantially free of co-monomers which yield free formaldehyde upon drying or curing of the dispersion and is also substantially free of ethylene oxide-containing emulsifiers. The aqueous dispersions resulting from polymerization of this monomer mixture has a solids content in weight percent and a Brookfield viscosity in millipascal-seconds such that the ratio of solids content to the natural logarithm of viscosity ranges from about 6.34 to about 8.25 wt%/ln(mPa.s). The dispersions herein also have a formaldehyde content of less than about 5.0 ppmw as determined by ISO-15173.

Disclosed are carpet products comprising at least one flexible substrate and at least one coating layer associated with the at least one flexible substrate. The coating layer is formed from an aqueous composition comprising: A) an emulsifier-stabilized vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsion copolymer dispersion wherein the VAE copolymer therein comprises co- monomers which include at least vinyl acetate copolymerized with ethylene and optionally also with other additional functional and/or non-functional co-monomers; and B) at least one particulate filler material selected from particulate inorganic compounds and particulate plastic material. The vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the copolymer dispersion has a particle size, dw, ranging from about 50 to about 500 nm as determined by Laser Aerosol Spectroscopy. Such carpet products maintain their integrity and appearance after multiple machine washing operations. Some of these carpet products which have backing coated with certain of the coating compositions used herein also exhibit desirable non-slip properties.
Disclosed are carpet products comprising at least one flexible substrate and at least one coating and/or adhesive layer associated with the at least one flexible substrate. The coating and/or adhesive layer is formed from an aqueous composition comprising: A) an emulsifier- stabilized vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsion copolymer dispersion wherein the VAE copolymer therein comprises co-monomers which include at least vinyl acetate copolymerized with ethylene and optionally also with other additional functional and/or non- functional co-monomers; and B) at least one particulate filler material selected from particulate inorganic compounds and particulate plastic material. The carpet product is substantially free of polyvinyl chloride and bitumen and exhibits a Class Bl flame-retardancy in accordance with DIN 4102-14, corresponding to a critical heat flux of ≤about 4.5 kW/m2.

The invention relates to novel cross-linkable monomers that may be polymerized with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers to form cross-linkable copolymers. Said copolymers may particularly be used in the form of aqueous dispersions as formaldehyde-free adhesives or as coatings with good water resistance. The invention relates to the production of vinyl ester homopolymers or copolymers by emulsion polymerization. The method is conducted in at least two phases in the presence of a component retarding the polymerization, wherein in the first phase the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture by the end of the first phase has not been depleted by more than 50% compared to the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture at the beginning of the first phase, and wherein in the second phase the concentration of the vinyl ester monomer in the polymerization mixture is depleted compared to the concentration at the end of the first phase. The retarding component is depleted during the first phase. The reaction heat is dissipated in the second phase by evaporative cooling. The emulsion polymerization occurs in the first phase at temperatures up to the boiling point of the vinyl ester-water azeotrope and in the second phase at temperatures above the boiling point of the vinyl ester-water azeotrope. The method is characterized by short cycle times and high space/time yields and is safe to perform.
What are described are polyvinyl ester dispersions having a minimum film formation temperature of less than or equal to 10°C. These comprise a crosslinkable polyvinyl ester dispersion and an ester of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and at least trihydric aliphatic alcohols and/or an ester of at least tribasic aliphatic carboxylic acids and monohydric aliphatic alcohols as film formation assistants. These polyvinyl ester dispersions can be used as adhesives with high water resistance.
