Abstract

The invention refers to a simple and cost-effective process for purifying a linear alkylbenzene (LAB) compound. Said process comprises a step of purification/adsorption which comprises contacting the LAB compound with activated carbon to obtain a purified LAB compound and exhausted activated carbon, and a step of regeneration/reactivation/desorption which comprises contacting said exhausted activated carbon with benzene to obtain regenerated activated carbon. The process of the invention may be conveniently implemented in continuous mode in an industrial plant with a system of two or more reactors operating in parallel, wherein at least one reactor is in adsorption stage and at least another reactor is in desorption stage. The treatment of LAB with activated carbon allows removing or minimizing impurities that are responsible for the color and that affect the quality of LAB as well as of its final product, the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS).
