Abstract
An intracranial stent includes a proximal end portion having a first diameter when the intracranial stent is in an expanded state, a distal end portion having a second diameter when the intracranial stent is in the expanded state, a central portion located between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion, the central portion having a third diameter when the intracranial stent is in the expanded state, the third diameter being less than the first diameter and less than the second diameter, and a proximal transition portion extending from the proximal end portion to the central portion, the proximal transition portion having a substantially frustoconical shape such that the proximal transition portion transitions from the first diameter to the third diameter. The intracranial stent also includes a distal transition portion extending from the distal end portion to the central portion, the distal transition portion having a substantially frustoconical shape.

A system for treating an intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis in an intracranial blood vessel includes an intracranial stent having a central portion disposed between a proximal portion and a distal portion of the stent, the central portion having a smaller diameter than a diameter of the proximal portion and smaller than a diameter of the distal portion when the stent is in an expanded configuration. The system includes a guiding apparatus having a guidance region, the guidance region having a first radiopaque region, a second radiopaque region, and a radiolucent region. The first radiopaque region and the second radiopaque region are separated by the radiolucent region, and, when the stent is placed on the guidance region, the proximal portion of the stent overlies the first radiopaque region, the central portion of the intracranial stent overlies the radiolucent region, and the distal portion of the intracranial stent overlies the second radiopaque region.

An intracranial stent includes a proximal end portion having a first diameter, a distal end portion having a second diameter, and a central portion located between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion, the central portion having a third diameter, the third diameter being less than the first diameter and less than the second diameter. The intracranial stent includes patterns of interstices, interstices in the central portion having areas that are smaller than areas of the interstices in the proximal end portion and in the distal end portion when the intracranial stent is in the expanded state. The intracranial stent has an unexpanded state in which diameters of the proximal end portion, the distal end portion, and the central portion are smaller than the first diameter, the second diameter, and the third diameter, respectively.

Abstract
An expandable stent to enhance the supply of blood to downstream tissue which is being supplied with blood through a diseased intracranial artery with a stenosis formed therein by plaque with a bore therethrough. The expandable stent includes first and second end portions joined by a central portion. The central portion is configured in the expanded state of the stent to be located in the bore of the stenosis with the first and second end portions abutting non-diseased parts of the artery adjacent the proximal and distal ends of the stenosis for anchoring the stent in the artery. The central portion with the stent in the expanded state is configured to apply a radial outward pressure to the stenosis such that the diameter of the bore of the stenosis is maintained at its current diameter or increased to approximately 50% of the non-diseased parts of the artery.

Abstract
A stent for use in a method for the treatment of an aneurysm (3) in an intracranial vessel (5) comprises an expandable framework (7) and a film (22) formed thereon by spraying, sputtering, dipping or the like of a polymer material. The stent comprises a central bridging portion (25) for bridging and closing the aneurysm (3) and first and second non-bridging portions (26) and (27). First communicating openings (29a) extend through the film (22) in the central bridging portion (25) and communicate with a central diverting bore (17) extending longitudinally through the framework (7) for accommodating blood flow therethrough to the aneurysm (3). Second communicating openings (29b) extending through the first and second non-bridging portions (26) and (27) accommodate blood flow from the diverting bore (17) to side vessels (30) and perforators (31 ) extending from the vessel (5) at respective opposite ends of the aneurysm (3). The area of the first communicating openings (29a) is less than the area of the second communicating openings (29b). The spacing between the first communicating openings (29a) is greater than the spacing between the second communicating openings (29b) so that blood flow is considerably restricted to the aneurysm (3), while normal blood flow is maintained to the side branches (30) and perforators (31).
