Abstract

A surge protective device (SPD) assembly includes a base and an SPD module configured to be mounted on the base. The SPD module includes an SPD module PCB, an SPD module circuit, and a thermal disconnector mechanism. The SPD module circuit is at least partly embodied in the SPD module PCB and includes an overvoltage protection component mounted on the SPD module PCB. The thermal disconnector mechanism is operative to transition from the ready configuration to an actuated configuration responsive to sufficient overheating of the overvoltage protection component. When the thermal disconnector mechanism is positioned in the ready configuration, the SPD circuit forms a first current path through the overvoltage protection component. When the thermal disconnector mechanism is positioned in the actuated configuration, the thermal disconnector mechanism forms an alternate second current path that bypasses the overvoltage protection component.

When the front cover is in the closed position, the first lateral section of the base module is covered by the front cover, and the SPD module is not covered by the front cover so that the SPD module is exposed through or projects through the access opening. When the front cover is in the open position, the first lateral section of the base module is not covered by the front cover.

The solder is meltable in response to overheating of the overvoltage clamping element. The disconnect spring is configured to electrically disconnect the overvoltage clamping element from the second module electrical terminal when the solder is melted. The thermal capacity of the heat sink member buffers and dissipates heat from the overvoltage clamping element to prevent the solder from melting in response to at least some surge currents through the SPD module.
