An optical illusion device and method of production is described. The method comprises producing a digital sculpt. A rendered visual image and a thinned digital sculpt are then produced from the digital sculpt. Next a digital thickness shell is produced from the thinned digital sculpt. Finally, the rendered visual image is employed to impart a lithophane depth map onto the digital thickness shell. The overall result is an optical illusion device comprising a negative image forming surface with a registered lithophane image imparted on thereon. When the optical illusion device is viewed from various angles (and with a light source placed behind it), the negative image forming surface appears to the viewer as a positive or convex model with a photographic image applied to the profiled surface. The illusion created is of a 'panning', three-dimensional photographic image, complete with improved detail due to the presence of the lithophane depth map.

An interactive toy is described that provides a physical representation of an avatar created by a user within a virtual or on-line gaming environment. The interactive toy comprises a unique identifier tag and an electrical circuit the electrical circuit comprising, an identifier tag sensor and an interface that provides a means for the toy to communicate with a computer system. The inclusion of the unique identifier tag allows for a portable toy to be produced that can act as both an identifier and a scanner and so provides for increased interaction within the real world for the users of the interactive toys. As a result such toys are able to record physical meetings that can be reflected as befriending events in the corresponding virtual on-line world.
A method and apparatus for controlling the position of a vehicle on a track so as to provide a slotless racing vehicle game is described. The method involves generating within a primary feedback loop a first input signal for a steering servo of the vehicle so as to minimize an error signal produced by comparing a measured lateral position of the vehicle on the track with its desired position. The method further comprises generating within a secondary feedback loop a second input signal for the steering servo so as minimize a measured angle of orientation of the vehicle on the track. It is found to be advantageous for the stability of the vehicle on the track if responsivity (Klf2) of the secondary feedback loop is set to be equal to the reciprocal of the responsivity (Kss) of the steering servo.
A track for a racing car game is described. The width of the track is formed so as to exhibit an optically graded lateral profile that is maintained along the length of the track. The optically graded profile thus provides a means for allocating each lateral position of the track with a unique level of reflectivity. In this way the level of light reflected onto a detector from a vehicle associated light source corresponds to a unique lateral position, and thus provides a diagnostic for determining the lateral position of the vehicle on the track and for maintaining this lateral position along the full length of the track. The track may therefore be considered to comprise a plurality of virtual slots for the vehicle between which the vehicle can easily move and the choice of which is determined by the vehicle's operator.

Described are backpacks that comprise a number of moveable components that provide novel animated effects which are controlled by the user of the backpack. The movement of these components (6, 7, 8, 9) may be accompanied by sounds which add to the overall surprise and amusement induced by the bags to surrounding observers. The amusement and surprise is further enhanced by having the means for controlling the moveable components discretely located within the backpack (1) so that they are not immediately obvious to these observers. Locating the control mechanisms (11, 12, 13) within the backpack also provides them with physical protection and assists in preventing them becoming entangled with each other or with other components of the backpack (1).
A method and apparatus for controlling the position of a vehicle on a track so as to provide a slotless racing vehicle game is described. The method involves measuring the lateral position of the vehicle on the track so as to minimize the distance with a user defined lateral position. A measured velocity of the vehicle is then feedback to a steering servo in order to stabilize the vehicle's position at the desired lateral position. In particular, the gain of a controller that generates the input signal for the steering servo is varied with the reciprocal of the square of the speed of the vehicle.
The invention provides a toy (5) with attachments, such as pieces (3) of armour as described in the preferred embodiments, which can be removed from the toy by striking with a projectile (6) or otherwise actuating a detachment mechanism. A biasing means such as a spring (8) or other resilient member causes the attachments to be forced away from the toy when released, to simulate an explosion, and may act to enhance attachment to the toy prior to actuation.

A steerable walking machine (1) is described which comprises a leg mechanism (3) that provides a means for locomotion of the machine across a surface and a head (2) rotatably mounted upon the leg mechanism (3). The rotational position of the head (2) upon the leg mechanism (3) acts to defines a direction of locomotion (6) of the machine (1) across the surface. The steerable walking machine (1) can therefore walk in any direction without requiring the leg mechanism (3) to turn and so can manoeuvre in more confined spaces than those devices known in the art. A first motor (26) is employed to control the leg mechanism (3) while a second motor (31) controls the rotation of the head (2) upon the leg mechanism. The functionality of the steerable walking machine is therefore achieved through the employment of only two motors (26, 31) thus significantly reducing the manufacturing costs involved.

The impeller assembly may be driven mechanically by the actuating mechanism by transfer of energy input by the user interaction. The apparatus may be used for an animal and in particular a dog. The described apparatus removes the need for a further power supply and so avoids unnecessary energy consumption and provides advantages in relation to cost, reliability, and longevity. Embodiments of the invention are modular in nature which greatly assists in training the animal to use the apparatus.
